Question 1

What happens in the passage in the exact order, and who initiates each major action?

Accepted Answer

The movement is driven by Elisha’s prayers and instructions. First, the raiders arrive and Elisha asks Yahweh to strike them with “blindness,” and the text says it happens as Elisha requested (vv. 18). Second, Elisha speaks to the disabled group, tells them they are on the wrong way and city, and leads them to Samaria (v. 19). Third, once inside Samaria, Elisha prays for their eyes to be opened, and they realize where they are (v. 20). Fourth, the king asks Elisha twice about killing them, and Elisha forbids it (vv. 21–22). Finally, the king feeds them, sends them back, and raids stop for a time (v. 23).

Question 2

What does the text explicitly say caused the raiders’ blindness and later their restored sight?

Accepted Answer

The passage explicitly ties both the blinding and the restoring of sight to Yahweh acting in response to Elisha’s requests. In v. 18, Elisha prays, and the text states Yahweh “struck them with blindness according to the word of Elisha,” connecting the effect to divine action matching the prophet’s request. In v. 20, after the group arrives in Samaria, Elisha again addresses Yahweh, asking that their eyes be opened, and the text says Yahweh opened their eyes and they saw. Whatever one concludes about the exact nature of the “blindness,” the narrative’s stated cause is Yahweh’s intervention linked to prophetic prayer.

Question 3

How does v. 20 change the power dynamic in the story, and how does the narrator show it?

Accepted Answer

Verse 20 flips the situation from a threat against Elisha/Israel to vulnerability for the raiders. When their eyes are opened, they “see” and recognize they are “in the midst of Samaria.” That phrase signals they are inside Israel’s fortified capital, surrounded by Israel’s authority, and no longer able to act as a raiding party. The narrator does not describe a battle or struggle; the shift happens through location and perception. The sudden realization (“behold”) underscores surprise and exposure. This sets up the king’s immediate question about striking them, because the raiders are effectively captured without Israel’s weapons being used in the capture itself.

Question 4

Why does the king repeat his question about striking them, and what does that reveal about his perspective?

Accepted Answer

The king asks twice, “shall I strike them?” (v. 21). The repetition fits the scene: he is looking at enemy raiders inside his capital, and the normal expectation would be execution or harsh treatment to deter future attacks. It also reveals that the king recognizes Elisha’s authority in this situation; he addresses him with deference (“my father”) and seeks his approval rather than acting immediately. The king’s perspective is shaped by military and royal instincts—enemy presence equals threat and opportunity. The double question heightens tension: the outcome could quickly become a slaughter, and the reader is positioned to watch whether prophetic counsel will redirect royal power.

Question 5

What reasons does Elisha give for not killing the raiders, and how does his comparison work?

Accepted Answer

Elisha gives a clear prohibition—“You shall not strike them”—and supports it with a comparison (v. 22). He asks whether the king would normally kill people taken captive by his own sword and bow. The implied answer is no: standard practice would include keeping captives for ransom, labor, exchange, or other controlled outcomes rather than immediate killing. Elisha’s point is that these men were not captured by the king’s weapons at all; they were delivered into Israel’s hand through Yahweh’s action. Therefore the king should set food and water before them so they can eat, drink, and return to “their master.” The argument reframes the event as controlled release rather than vengeance.

Question 6

What does feeding the raiders communicate within the story, and how is that tied to the reported result in v. 23?

Accepted Answer

Within the story’s social and political world, providing a “great provision” is not a casual snack; it is a deliberate signal of control and message-bearing hospitality. The king has them thoroughly in his power, yet he treats them as guests long enough to feed them and then sends them away (v. 23). That communicates restraint and also a kind of demonstration: Israel can capture raiders at will (by Yahweh’s help) and still choose not to kill. The narrative then links this action to a concrete outcome: the Aramean “bands” did not come again into Israel’s land. The text presents the meal-and-release as part of what ends (or pauses) the raiding pattern.

Question 7

In v. 22, who is “their master,” and what does that phrase imply about the raiders’ mission?

Accepted Answer

The phrase “their master” most naturally refers to the authority the raiders serve—likely the Aramean king, though it could also include a commander acting under him. The passage does not specify the individual, but it clearly assumes the raiders are not acting independently; they are part of an organized effort against Israel and are accountable to a superior. Elisha’s instruction that they return to their master implies the release is meant to be seen and reported, not hidden. The raiders become carriers of information: they can testify that they were neutralized, led into Samaria, and spared. In the story’s logic, that report helps explain why raids cease for a time (v. 23).
