Blindness and misdirection As the raiders advance, Elisha prays that Yahweh would strike “this people” with blindness, and it happens as Elisha requested. Elisha then addresses the blinded group, telling them they are on the wrong road and in the wrong city. He invites them to follow him, promising to lead them to the man they are seeking, and he leads them to Samaria.
Sight restored inside Samaria After arriving in Samaria, Elisha prays again, asking Yahweh to open the men’s eyes so they can see. Their sight returns, and they realize they are “in the midst of Samaria,” meaning they are surrounded by Israel’s power center and no longer control their situation.
The king’s question and Elisha’s refusal Seeing the raiders exposed, the king of Israel addresses Elisha with deference (“my father”) and asks twice whether he should strike them down. Elisha answers with a firm prohibition: the king must not strike them. He argues by comparison: the king would not normally kill people he had taken as captives by his own weapons; instead, he should set food and water before them so they can eat, drink, and return to “their master.”
Literary Context
This scene sits within a sequence of Elisha narratives highlighting his influence in Israel’s conflicts with Aram/Syria and his role in protecting Israel without commanding an army. Just before this, Aramean forces repeatedly fail to capture the prophet because their plans are disclosed, and Elisha’s servant is shown a hidden protective presence around them. Hospitality, release, and the reported result The king prepares a large meal for them. After they eat and drink, he sends them away, and they return to their master. The passage concludes by stating that Syrian raiding bands did not come again into Israel’s land, presenting the release as followed by at least a temporary cessation of this kind of incursion.
The story also highlights restraint. The king has the power to kill the captured raiders and asks permission, but Elisha blocks that outcome and redirects the moment toward food, release, and return.
The closing line links mercy with security: the raiding bands stop coming “again into the land of Israel,” at least for a time.
What “blindness” means. Some read it as full loss of sight. Others think it means a disabling confusion or disorientation that still allows movement. Either way, it removes the raiders’ ability to carry out their mission.
How to read Elisha’s words in v. 19. Some take “This is not the way…neither is this the city” as a deliberate deception. Others think it is true in a limited sense (they are not on the path to successfully seize him, and they are not in the city where they will complete their goal), or that it functions as strategic misdirection permitted in wartime.
How long the relief lasts in v. 23. Some take it as a decisive end to this raiding pattern. Others read it as a temporary lull, especially since later chapters describe renewed Aramean pressure.
The story is compact and does not pause to explain the exact nature of the “blindness,” Elisha’s intent in his speech, or the time horizon of “no more.” Those details must be inferred from normal word usage, narrative flow, and the wider conflict cycle in 2 Kings.
