The Virtues to Build On Faith

This unit follows the opening claim that divine power has provided what is needed for life and godliness (cf. 2 Peter 1:3–4). On that basis (“for this very reason”), the author calls for diligence in cultivating a chain of virtues (1:5–7). The next section explains the practical effect of these traits: they prevent stagnation and support a stable course (cf. 2 Peter 1:8–11).

The letter reflects a late first-century Roman Mediterranean setting in which moral instruction competed with other teachers and philosophical “virtue” programs. Communities used compact lists of traits to mark shared identity, encourage endurance under social pressure, and guide household and public conduct.

Theological significance

On that basis, he shifts to a step-by-step list of qualities to supply, moving from faith toward love. The passage presents a deliberate “supply/add” pattern linking each quality to the next in 2 Peter 1:5–7. Knowledge, self-control, endurance, godliness, and brotherly affection are explicitly named items within the chain.
