The difference is mainly about how explicit the referent is in these verses.
Who are “the fathers.” Some take “the fathers” to mean Israel’s ancestors (patriarchs/forefathers), which would make the scoffers’ point: “For as long as our ancestral story goes, life has continued.” Others take it as the first generation of believers/teachers who had already died, which would sharpen the complaint as, “The earlier Christian witnesses are gone, and nothing has happened.”
How to read the “fire” language. Some read v. 7 as a literal, future destruction/transformation of the cosmos by fire at the final judgment. Others take “fire” as vivid judgment imagery emphasizing certainty and severity rather than giving a physical description. Either way, the verse’s explicit claim is that the present order is being “kept” toward a coming judgment.
