Question 1

What argument do the scoffers use to challenge “the promise of his coming” in verses 3–4?

Accepted Answer

In vv. 3–4 the scoffers connect two ideas: (1) generations have died (“the fathers fell asleep”), and (2) the world appears to run on as it always has (“all things continue”). From those observations they infer that the promised “coming” is not really going to happen, or that the promise has failed. The passage portrays their reasoning as an appeal to the apparent stability of the world and the length of time since earlier generations, using that stability as evidence against a future, decisive interruption of history.

Question 2

How does the text connect the scoffers’ behavior (“walking after their own desires”) with their message?

Accepted Answer

Verse 3 links the scoffers’ speech to their way of life: they “walk after their own desires” and also mock the promise. The passage does not argue in detail, but it implies a relationship between what they want and what they are willing to believe. Their mockery is not presented as neutral questioning; it is framed as coming from people whose desires shape their conclusions. That framing prepares for the author’s later claim that their argument depends on what they “willfully forget” (v. 5).

Question 3

What does “they willfully forget” (v. 5) refer to, and why is it important to the author’s reply?

Accepted Answer

In v. 5 the author says the scoffers’ confidence depends on deliberate forgetfulness about God’s prior actions. Specifically, they ignore that “there were heavens from of old” and that the earth was formed “out of water and amid water” by God’s word. This matters because it undermines the scoffers’ claim that the world is self-contained and unchanging. If the world’s existence and ordering are credited to God’s word, then history is not closed off from God’s decisive action; the stability of the present order is not proof that intervention cannot occur.

Question 4

How does verse 6 function as a counterexample to “all things continue as they were”?

Accepted Answer

Verse 6 introduces a concrete disruption: the “world that then was” was overflowed with water and “perished.” The author uses this as a direct rebuttal to the scoffers’ claim of uninterrupted continuity since creation. Even if people experience long stretches of normal life, the passage insists there has already been a world-altering judgment within the story of the world. The point is not merely that disasters happen, but that God’s involvement can bring about a decisive turning point that breaks the assumption of endless sameness.

Question 5

What role does “by the word of God” play in verses 5 and 7?

Accepted Answer

The phrase ties the passage together: in v. 5 God’s word is credited with establishing the world’s ordered existence, and in v. 7 the “same word” is said to store up (keep/reserve) the present heavens and earth for a future day. The explicit textual claim is that God’s word is active both in the world’s origin and in its direction toward judgment. Theological inference often drawn from this is that creation and final judgment are not separate topics: the same divine authority that brought the world into being also governs its future end or transformation.

Question 6

What does verse 7 add to the argument beyond the creation-and-flood reminders?

Accepted Answer

Verse 7 moves from past to future. After recalling creation (v. 5) and the flood (v. 6), it claims that the present heavens and earth are being kept for “fire,” reserved for the “day of judgment” and the destruction of ungodly people. This adds an explicit future horizon: the author is not only saying “change has happened before,” but also “a greater reckoning is appointed.” It also clarifies that the coming event is moral and judicial, not merely a natural upheaval: it is tied to judgment and the fate of the ungodly.

Question 7

What possible meanings of “the fathers fell asleep” fit the passage, and how does each affect the scoffers’ point?

Accepted Answer

Two readings fit the wording and context. It may refer to Israel’s ancestors (the forefathers), making the scoffers’ claim broad: from the time of the ancestors until now, the world seems stable. Or it may refer to earlier believers/teachers who had died, making the claim more pointed: the first generation that expected the promised coming is gone, and nothing has changed. In either case, the scoffers use the passage of time and the death of prior generations to argue that the promise lacks credibility.
