Question 1

In verses 19–20, what problem does David foresee if the news spreads to Gath and Ashkelon, and what does that reveal about the stakes of this defeat?

Accepted Answer

David fears the Philistine cities will turn Israel’s loss into public celebration and mockery. The issue is not only that Saul and Jonathan died, but that the defeat will be used as propaganda: “the daughters of the Philistines” rejoicing signals a public, communal triumph song. That implies Israel’s honor and morale are at risk alongside military security. The poem treats enemy celebration as a second wound—defeat plus humiliation—so David’s first moves are to name the loss as “Israel’s glory” struck down and to try (at least rhetorically) to contain the shame from spreading.

Question 2

What does David’s address to the “mountains of Gilboa” (v.21) accomplish inside the poem?

Accepted Answer

Speaking to the mountains personifies the landscape and makes the defeat feel cosmic and permanent, not merely tactical. By wishing for no dew or rain, David paints Gilboa as a place that should bear the mark of disaster. The reason given is that “there the shield of the mighty was cast away,” linking the land directly to the collapse of Israel’s defenders. Whether read as poetic intensity or a real curse, the effect is the same within the lament: Gilboa becomes a named symbol of ruined protection and the end of Saul’s house on the battlefield.

Question 3

How do verses 22–23 portray Saul and Jonathan, and what details does David choose to highlight?

Accepted Answer

David highlights battlefield effectiveness and shared identity. Jonathan’s bow “didn’t turn back” and Saul’s sword “didn’t return empty,” describing steady success in striking enemies. Then he describes them as “lovely and pleasant” in life and “not divided” in death, emphasizing unity rather than rivalry or failure. The animal comparisons (eagles, lions) amplify speed and strength, classic traits of heroic warriors. Notably, the poem does not rehearse Saul’s conflicts with David or Saul’s disobedience narratives; it selects qualities that fit a public funeral song for fallen leaders.

Question 4

Why does verse 24 call on the “daughters of Israel” to weep, and what kind of argument is used to support mourning for Saul?

Accepted Answer

The call to the “daughters of Israel” frames mourning as a national, communal act, voiced through a group associated with public lament. The reasons given are practical and social: Saul “clothed you in scarlet” and put “ornaments of gold” on clothing. That points to prosperity, status, and the material results of royal success—whether through security, trade, or spoils of war distributed to the people. David’s argument is not that Saul was morally flawless, but that Saul’s reign brought tangible benefits. The lament invites grief by recalling what the community received under his leadership.

Question 5

How does the poem shift in verses 25–27, and what is the effect of ending with David’s words about Jonathan?

Accepted Answer

The poem tightens from national loss to personal bereavement. Verse 25 repeats the refrain about the “mighty” falling but singles out Jonathan: “slain on your high places,” echoing the opening line and tying Jonathan to Israel’s overall “glory.” Verses 26–27 then become intimate: David names Jonathan “my brother,” speaks of distress, and calls Jonathan’s love “wonderful,” even surpassing the love of women. Ending this way gives the lament emotional depth: it is not only statecraft or public image-management. The final line—“the weapons of war perished”—closes by linking personal loss to national vulnerability.

Question 6

What repeated words or images hold the units together, and how do they guide the reader’s sense of meaning?

Accepted Answer

The refrain “How are the mighty fallen” anchors the poem at key turns (vv. 19, 25, 27). It repeatedly interprets the events as the collapse of strength, not merely the death of individuals. The “high places” image appears at the beginning and again with Jonathan, turning the battlefield heights into a memorial space. Weapons imagery (shield, bow, sword, “weapons of war”) threads through the middle and end, keeping the focus on leadership-as-defense. The repeated calls to different audiences (Israel, Philistine cities, mountains, daughters of Israel, Jonathan) move the lament from public to personal while staying on the theme of loss.
