Question 1

In verse 3, what alternative explanation do the Ammonite leaders give for David’s “comforters,” and how do they build their case?

Accepted Answer

They challenge the idea that David is “honoring” Hanun’s father by sending comforters. Instead, they pile up three related accusations: David’s servants came to “search the city,” “spy it out,” and “overthrow it.” The sequence moves from information gathering to hostile intent, presenting the visit as reconnaissance for conquest rather than condolence. The leaders offer no evidence in the verse; their argument works by framing the same action (sending envoys) as a threat, making suspicion sound prudent and urgent.

Question 2

What does Hanun do in verse 4, and how do those actions function as more than private mistreatment?

Accepted Answer

Hanun seizes David’s servants, shaves off half of each man’s beard, and cuts their garments so that they are exposed “to their buttocks,” then sends them away. These actions are designed to be seen. Because the men are official representatives, humiliating their appearance turns them into public symbols of disgrace and rejection. The half-shaved beard and exposed body make it difficult for them to travel or appear in public without shame, so the insult travels with them as a message back to David’s court.

Question 3

What clues in verses 4–5 show that the humiliation is intentional and targeted at David as well as the servants?

Accepted Answer

The men are not simply attacked; they are altered in ways that mark them publicly (half a beard, exposed clothing) and then deliberately sent away. Since they are explicitly called “David’s servants,” their treatment communicates contempt toward the sender. Verse 5 reinforces this by describing their great shame and by showing David responding as king: he hears, sends to meet them, and manages their return. The narrative logic treats the servants’ disgrace as a diplomatic incident, not merely personal harm.

Question 4

How does verse 5 portray David’s response, and what does it emphasize about the messengers’ condition?

Accepted Answer

David does not summon the men to appear in court; he “sent to meet them,” implying he goes out of his way to intercept them and manage the situation discreetly. The verse highlights that “the men were greatly ashamed,” placing their social vulnerability at the center. David instructs them to wait at Jericho until their beards grow back and only then return. The emphasis is on restoring their public dignity before any broader political or military decisions are described in the immediate text.

Question 5

What role does “Jericho” play in the story’s logic, based on verse 5 and the wider setting described in Stage A?

Accepted Answer

Jericho functions as a practical holding place where the men can avoid public exposure while they recover their appearance. Verse 5 ties Jericho directly to the time needed for their beards to grow back, suggesting privacy and protection from further shame. In the wider setting, Jericho’s location near travel routes and borderlands makes it a plausible meeting and waiting point before returning to the royal center. The narrative uses Jericho to show David managing the fallout with care and discretion.

Question 6

What does the passage assume about beards and clothing that makes Hanun’s actions so severe?

Accepted Answer

The passage assumes that a man’s beard and proper clothing are closely connected to honor and public dignity. Shaving “half” the beard is not just grooming; it produces a visible, mocking disfigurement that cannot be quickly hidden. Cutting garments so the lower body is exposed adds another layer of disgrace, turning the men into walking signs of humiliation. Because these are envoys, the assault on their appearance is also an assault on their status and the respect due to the king they represent.

Question 7

How do verses 3–5 set up the conflict that follows without describing the battle yet?

Accepted Answer

The unit shows a chain reaction: suspicion reinterprets a kindness (v.3), the new interpretation drives a provocative act (v.4), and the shame becomes a matter requiring royal management (v.5). Even without mentioning warfare, the actions already function like a rejection of peaceful relations: the envoys return not with words of condolence accepted, but with a visible insult. The next verses (outside this unit) will treat the situation as politically dangerous, but the groundwork is laid here by the public nature of the disgrace.
