Restitution and the stated reasons David adds a concrete penalty: the man must restore the lamb “fourfold.” He explains why: the man “did this thing” and, more pointedly, “had no pity.” The lack of compassion becomes central to David’s condemnation, not only the act of taking.
Nathan’s reversal and the opening of Yahweh’s charge Nathan answers David with a blunt identification: “You are the man.” The focus shifts from the hypothetical offender to David himself. The scene assumes a functioning royal court where a prophet can gain audience with the king and deliver a direct message.
