The desire and the obstacle The narrator introduces Tamar as Absalom’s beautiful sister and says Amnon loved her. Amnon’s desire turns into distress so intense that he becomes physically unwell. The text gives a reason the situation feels blocked: Tamar is a virgin, and to Amnon it seems difficult—almost impossible—for him to do anything to her.
Jonadab draws out the secret Amnon has a close associate, Jonadab, identified as David’s brother’s son, and described as very shrewd. Jonadab notices Amnon’s worsening appearance and presses him for an explanation, addressing him as “son of the king.” Amnon admits plainly that he loves Tamar, specifying her as Absalom’s sister.
The scheme and David’s involvement Jonadab proposes a plan built on appearance and procedure: Amnon should lie down, pretend to be sick, and when David comes, request that Tamar come prepare food where Amnon can watch and then eat from her hand. A main question is what “loved” means here. Some read it as intense sexual desire or obsession from the start, especially because the plan aims at getting Tamar alone. Others think the text begins with real attraction or affection but shows it becoming distorted into consuming desire; they point out that the passage itself has not yet described any physical action, only longing and scheming.
Another question is what “it seemed hard…to do anything to her” implies (v. 2). Some understand this mainly as practical barriers: Tamar is protected as an unmarried royal daughter, and Amnon cannot easily reach her. Others think it also hints at awareness of wrongdoing—an internal sense that acting on this desire would be wrong—even if the social barriers are what the story emphasizes.
The story uses morally loaded but broad words (“loved,” “hard to do anything,” “subtle/shrewd”) without stopping to explain motives in detail. The narrator gives enough facts to show escalation but leaves readers to infer how much is social constraint, inner restraint, or both.
This scene sets up how wrongdoing can move through ordinary channels: a sickbed visit, a household food request, and a father’s approval. It also shows the danger of “shrewd” counsel when it serves desire rather than truth.
