Literary Context
This scene sits inside the larger story of Absalom’s revolt against David. In the preceding council meeting, competing plans were proposed for how Absalom should pursue David; Hushai’s role is to undermine the more dangerous plan and buy time. The narrative now shifts from decision-making in Absalom’s camp to communication and movement in David’s flight. The tension turns on secrecy, speed, and near-discovery: a warning must reach David before Absalom can act. The successful crossing of the Jordan marks a decisive moment of separation and temporary safety, setting up what follows in the pursuit and battle.
