Verse by Verse
Absalom is trapped and left suspended Absalom “happens” to meet David’s servants while riding a mule. As the mule passes under dense branches of a great oak, Absalom’s head becomes caught in the tree. The mule keeps going, leaving Absalom hanging between “sky and earth,” helpless and exposed.
Report to Joab and refusal to strike A soldier sees Absalom hanging and reports it to Joab. Joab responds with surprise and reproach: if the man saw Absalom, why didn’t he strike him down? Joab adds a promised reward of silver and a sash. The soldier refuses, saying that even a much larger payment would not persuade him to harm “the king’s son,” because David had given a direct order—heard by those present—that Absalom should not be touched. He also argues self-preservation: the king would find out, and Joab would not protect him.
Joab kills Absalom and his men finish the act Joab ends the conversation abruptly, saying he will not delay. He takes three darts and thrusts them into Absalom’s heart while Absalom is still alive, hanging in the oak. Then ten young men who carry Joab’s armor surround Absalom, strike him, and kill him.
Literary Context
This scene comes in the middle of the battle between David’s forces and the rebel forces led by Absalom. Just before this, David organizes his army under commanders including Joab and gives a public instruction that Absalom should be treated carefully. The narrative now shows how that order meets battlefield realities: Absalom is suddenly vulnerable, an ordinary soldier hesitates out of loyalty and fear of the king, and Joab acts decisively in the opposite direction. The next verses (beyond this unit) move to the announcement of Absalom’s death and David’s reaction.

As a theological inference consistent with the book’s larger themes, the passage illustrates how major outcomes in Israel’s story can come through ordinary events and morally charged human choices—loyalty, fear, ambition, and decisive violence—without the narrator needing to announce those themes directly.
