Others take Joab’s speech mainly as political pressure that exploits the crisis: Joab may be describing how things look more than what David truly intends, using exaggerated contrasts (“love/hate,” “if Absalom had lived…”) to force David back into public control (vv. 6–7).
The narrator reports Joab’s accusations without immediately endorsing or correcting them. Several lines can be heard either as moral diagnosis or as strategic rhetoric: the “love/hate” contrast, the “I perceive” statement, and the forecast that “not a man” will stay (vv. 6–7). That leaves room to ask how much is David’s inner reality versus the public meaning of his actions.
Explicitly, the text portrays how a king’s public mourning can reshape national morale and loyalty in a fragile civil-war aftermath (vv. 1–4). It also presents Joab as a commander who believes honor, recognition, and public speech from the king are necessary to keep the army’s allegiance (vv. 5–7).
