First, “Adino the Eznite” (v.8) may be another name/title for Josheb-basshebeth, or it may refer to a different figure connected to the same exploit. The wording can be read either way, and a parallel list elsewhere complicates the names.
Second, readers differ on how to take the extreme details: the “eight hundred” killed at one time and Eleazar’s hand “freezing” to the sword. Some take these as straightforward reporting of extraordinary events; others take them as conventional heroic narration (rounded totals and vivid physical description) that still aims to report a real victory.
The Hebrew behind the names and phrases is compressed, like a list or archive note, and it may preserve older wording. Also, ancient battle summaries often highlight representative feats without the kind of precision modern readers expect, which affects how people judge numbers and physical imagery.
It shows how the book of Samuel remembers David’s reign not only through royal decisions but through key supporters whose actions protected Israel at critical moments. It also states a combined view of agency: individuals fight and endure, yet the final explanation for “great victory” is Yahweh’s action. The repeated retreat/return detail (people withdraw, then come back for plunder) underscores that these victories are portrayed as turning points produced by a few resolute fighters in a moment of wider fear.
