David’s conscience and confession David experiences a sudden inner blow after the census, described as his “heart” striking him. He speaks directly to Yahweh, openly calling his action a great wrong. He asks Yahweh to remove the guilt of his servant and admits he acted very foolishly, framing the problem as moral failure, not mere miscalculation.
A prophetic message and a forced choice The next morning, Yahweh’s word comes to Gad, identified as David’s seer. Gad is told to go to David with a message: Yahweh is presenting three possible actions, and David must choose one.
