Araunah offers sacrificial materials and a blessing Araunah tells David to take whatever he wants for an offering. He points out specific items: oxen for the burnt offering, and the threshing tools and ox yokes to serve as wood. He then repeats that he gives it all to the king and adds a wish that Yahweh, David’s God, would accept David.
David insists on paying and explains why David refuses to take the site and animals as a gift. He states he will buy it “at a price” and gives his reason: he will not offer burnt offerings to Yahweh that cost him nothing. The narrative then states the completed purchase: David buys the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.
David offers, and the plague ends David builds an altar at that place and offers two kinds of offerings: burnt offerings and peace offerings. The result is described in two connected outcomes: Yahweh responds favorably toward the land, and the plague is stopped from Israel.
Literary Context
This unit concludes the larger episode of David’s census and its aftermath in 2 Samuel 24. After the plague begins, David is directed to a specific site—Araunah’s threshing floor—as the place where he should act in response. Verses 22–25 focus tightly on what happens at that location: Araunah’s generous offer, David’s refusal to take it for nothing, the purchase, and the offerings. The ending line functions as the story’s resolution: the land is relieved and the plague stops.
Historical Context
Threshing floors were open, hard-packed spaces used to process grain, often located on higher ground where wind helped separate grain from chaff. Oxen were valuable work animals, so giving them away would be a significant gift. Wood was also a costly resource, so repurposing farm equipment for fuel underscores urgency and generosity. Payments in silver “shekels” reflect common weight-based exchange. The passage assumes a king with authority and resources, yet also portrays negotiated property transfer and public worship actions that affect the wider community.
