Question 1

In verse 1, what two reactions are described after Ish-bosheth hears Abner has died, and how are they connected?

Accepted Answer

Verse 1 gives two linked reactions: Ish-bosheth’s “hands became feeble” (a picture of lost courage or resolve), and “all the Israelites were troubled” (wider anxiety). The connection is cause-and-effect within the political situation: Abner’s death removes a central support for Ish-bosheth’s rule, so the leader’s confidence collapses and the broader people aligned with him become unsettled. The text does not describe a battle here; it describes a shockwave of instability triggered by the report that Abner died in Hebron.

Question 2

Why does the narrator name Hebron in verse 1, and what does that detail add to the scene?

Accepted Answer

Hebron is where Abner died and where Ish-bosheth hears the news. Naming the place anchors the report to a specific political center in the story, because Hebron is also closely connected with David’s rise. Even without spelling out motives, the location signals that Abner’s death happened in a setting tied to shifting loyalties and leadership claims. It adds weight to the fear described: the news comes from a city that already matters in the contest for power, so the report is not just personal loss but a strategic crisis.

Question 3

What information do verses 2–3 give about Rechab and Baanah, and why might these details matter for understanding what follows?

Accepted Answer

Verses 2–3 identify Rechab and Baanah as two men under Ish-bosheth who are “captains of bands,” then trace their family and regional ties: they are sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, and Beeroth is counted within Benjamin. The narrator also adds a note that Beeroth’s people fled to Gittaim and stayed there long-term. These details matter because they locate the men socially and geographically, suggesting they have established networks and a background shaped by displacement and conflict—useful context for how such figures might operate in a weakening kingdom.

Question 4

What does the parenthetical note about Beerothites fleeing to Gittaim (v.3) tell you, and what does it not tell you?

Accepted Answer

It tells you that Beeroth experienced a flight of its inhabitants and that the displaced Beerothites became long-term residents (“sojourners”) in Gittaim. It also signals that the narrator’s audience knows this situation as continuing “until this day,” meaning it was still true when the account was written. What it does not tell you is the cause, timing, or specific events that led to the flight; the verse gives no direct reason. The note mainly supplies background that helps explain regional identity and perhaps later loyalties.

Question 5

How does verse 4 function in this short unit, and what does it reveal about Saul’s family situation?

Accepted Answer

Verse 4 briefly shifts from political figures to Saul’s family line through Jonathan by introducing Mephibosheth and explaining his disability. The verse reveals that the injury happened when panic broke out after news arrived from Jezreel about Saul and Jonathan; in the hurried escape, the child fell and became lame. In the unit’s flow, this functions as another marker of vulnerability in Saul’s house: not only is leadership shaken by Abner’s death (v.1), but the surviving heir from Jonathan is physically impaired, which in that setting could limit perceived strength and political usefulness.

Question 6

What does the passage explicitly say caused Mephibosheth’s lameness, and what assumptions should be avoided?

Accepted Answer

The passage explicitly attributes Mephibosheth’s lameness to an accident during flight: the nurse picked him up and fled when news came from Jezreel, and in the haste he fell and became lame (v.4). It does not say the injury was intentional, nor does it assign blame beyond describing the rushed circumstances. It also does not frame the disability as a moral judgment. Avoid assuming the narrator is condemning the nurse or implying that physical disability equals spiritual failure; the text’s stated purpose is to explain a lasting weakness in Saul’s surviving line.

Question 7

Taken together, what kinds of “weakness” are highlighted across verses 1–4, and how are they different?

Accepted Answer

The unit highlights several kinds of weakness. In verse 1, it is psychological and political: Ish-bosheth loses nerve, and the coalition becomes troubled after Abner’s death. In verses 2–3, the weakness is structural: the king relies on commanders with their own armed groups, and the note about displaced Beerothites hints at unsettled social conditions. In verse 4, the weakness is dynastic and personal: a surviving descendant of Saul through Jonathan is permanently disabled. These are different layers—leader confidence, power networks, and the condition of heirs—converging to show a fragile house.
