Others treat the terms more broadly as a way of naming Jerusalem as David’s new capital, even if the immediate reference is the fortified core.

Why the disagreement exists The text reports the taunt but does not spell out its background, and the phrase “blind and lame” can function as either an insult or a literal reference. Likewise, “stronghold,” “Zion,” and “city of David” can name overlapping spaces (fortress, hill, city) depending on how tightly one thinks the author is speaking.

What this passage clearly contributes At a narrative level, the passage highlights reversal: confident defenders are wrong, and David succeeds anyway. Politically and theologically (by inference from the story’s emphasis), it frames David’s reign as quickly establishing a secure center, with Zion/Jerusalem becoming identified with David’s kingship (compare the later importance of Zion in Israel’s story, e.g., Psalm 48:1).
