Unit 1 (v. 11a): A persistent prayer with a defined aim
Paul says he keeps praying for them “to this end,” pointing back to the goal just discussed in the previous sentences. The prayer is not occasional but ongoing. The aim is that “our God” would count them worthy of their calling—meaning their lived pattern would match what they have been called into.
Unit 2 (v. 11b): God completing good intentions and faith-shaped actions
Paul asks that God would bring to completion “every desire of goodness” and every “work of faith.” This frames their inner aims (“desire”) and their outward activity (“work”) as things God helps carry through, not merely things they start. He adds that this completion is “with power,” stressing effective divine enabling (power).
Unit 3 (v. 12a): The intended result—honor displayed in both directions
The purpose statement (“that”) explains why he prays this: so “the name of our Lord Jesus” would be honored in them, and they would be honored in him. Their visible life is portrayed as a setting where Jesus’ reputation is displayed, and where their own standing is bound up with their relationship to him.
Unit 4 (v. 12b): The basis—grace from God and the Lord Jesus Christ
Paul grounds the whole outcome “according to the grace” of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ. The measure and source is gracious giving, not their independent achievement, even though their desires and actions remain in view.
