Question 1

In v. 22, how does the structure “flee… but pursue…” shape the meaning of the verse?

Accepted Answer

The verse presents a two-part movement: leaving something and actively chasing something else. “Flee” suggests more than resisting in place; it implies creating distance from desires linked with youth. But the main point is not only avoidance. The “but pursue” half gives a positive direction—righteousness, faith, love, and peace—so the moral vision is not simply “don’t do X,” but “become this kind of person.” The final phrase (“with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart”) anchors this pursuit in shared community rather than isolated self-control.

Question 2

What are the four virtues named in v. 22, and how might they relate to the conflict-focused instructions that follow?

Accepted Answer

The four named virtues are righteousness, faith, love, and peace. Even before vv. 23–26 mention disputes directly, “peace” sets a trajectory that contrasts with “strife.” “Love” and “peace” especially fit the later requirement that the Lord’s servant be gentle and not quarrelsome. “Righteousness” and “faith” connect to integrity and reliability in teaching and conduct, which matters when facing opponents. Taken together, the virtues look like the inner posture and relational tone that make correction possible without becoming combative or escalating into fights.

Question 3

In v. 23, what kinds of discussions are refused, and what reason is given?

Accepted Answer

The text specifies “foolish and ignorant questionings,” not all questions. The reason given is practical: they “generate strife.” The emphasis is on predictable outcomes—some lines of argument tend to produce heat rather than clarity, division rather than understanding. Within the paragraph, refusing these disputes is paired with being “able to teach” (v. 24), which suggests the refusal is not anti-learning. It is a refusal of a certain quality of debate: poorly grounded, unproductive, and relationally damaging in effect.

Question 4

According to vv. 24–25, what qualities define “the Lord’s servant,” and how do they relate to handling opposition?

Accepted Answer

The Lord’s servant is defined first by what he is not: not quarrelsome. Positively, he is “gentle towards all,” “able to teach,” and “patient.” These are relational and instructional qualities, aimed at difficult situations. Opposition is expected (“those who oppose him”), but the passage does not frame the goal as winning. The servant’s posture is steady: kindness toward people, competence in teaching, and endurance under pressure. The explicit manner of correction is “in gentleness,” implying that the tone is part of faithful ministry, not merely strategy.

Question 5

In v. 25, what is the hoped-for outcome of gentle correction, and who is portrayed as the one who grants it?

Accepted Answer

The hoped-for outcome is that opponents may receive “repentance” that leads to “the knowledge of the truth.” Repentance here is described as a change of mind and direction that brings someone into contact with truth, not just losing an argument. Importantly, the text portrays God as the one who “may give” this repentance. The corrector’s role is real—he teaches and corrects—but the passage places ultimate hope for transformation in God’s action rather than the corrector’s skill or forcefulness.

Question 6

How does v. 26 describe the opponents’ condition and the kind of change envisioned?

Accepted Answer

The verse uses imagery of capture and release. The opponents are pictured as caught in “the devil’s snare” and as having been “taken captive… to his will.” The change envisioned is that “they may recover themselves,” meaning coming back to their senses and regaining freedom. This builds on v. 25: repentance and knowledge of the truth are not only intellectual adjustments but also deliverance from deception that has real power over a person’s choices. The verse frames error as ensnaring, and restoration as liberation.

Question 7

What is the relationship in this paragraph between avoiding certain disputes (v. 23) and correcting opponents (vv. 25–26)?

Accepted Answer

The paragraph holds both together: some disputes are refused because they predictably create strife, yet correction still happens when there are opponents. The contrast implies discernment. Refusing “questionings” is not a refusal to teach; it is a refusal of unproductive controversy. Correcting opponents is described as gentle and hopeful, aiming at repentance and release from deception. In other words, the passage distinguishes between engagement that escalates conflict (to be avoided) and engagement that patiently teaches and corrects (to be practiced).
