Why the disagreement exists The key phrases are brief and can be read at different “levels.” “Delivered” can describe escape, survival, or preservation through suffering. “All” (all) can be used as an unqualified universal or as a sweeping generalization meant to set expectations. And the letter’s immediate context includes both internal corruption (3:1–9) and external hostility, so “evil men and impostors” can plausibly be mapped onto more than one group.
