Question 1

In verse 6, what two statements does Paul use to describe his present situation, and how do they relate to each other?

Accepted Answer

Paul says he is already “being offered” and that the time of his “departure has come.” The first phrase pictures his life as in the process of being poured out or presented, suggesting the end is not merely possible but underway. The second phrase adds a time marker: his leaving is near and has effectively arrived. Together they reinforce the same point from two angles—his current imprisonment is moving toward imminent death, and he is interpreting that moment through a purposeful image rather than only as violence or defeat.

Question 2

What do the three short lines in verse 7 (“fight… course… faith”) communicate when read together?

Accepted Answer

The three lines function as a summary of Paul’s life and ministry from his own perspective. “I have fought the good fight” highlights sustained struggle that he still calls “good,” implying the cause was worth the cost. “I have finished the course” suggests a defined task or route that could be completed, not an endless wandering. “I have kept the faith” adds the idea of continued loyalty—either holding onto trust in God or guarding the entrusted message. Together they convey endurance, completion, and faithfulness.

Question 3

In verse 8, what details show that Paul expects a future evaluation, not just a general sense of peace about death?

Accepted Answer

Paul speaks of something “stored up” for him—an award kept in reserve—rather than merely describing a calm emotional state. He identifies the giver as “the Lord” and explicitly calls him “the righteous judge,” which frames the future as an assessment by a fair evaluator. He also locates the giving “at that day,” pointing to a particular future moment of reckoning. These details show Paul expects a concrete future outcome tied to divine judgment, not simply a subjective confidence as he dies.

Question 4

What is meant by “crown of righteousness” in the flow of verse 8, and what does the text clearly say (and not say) about it?

Accepted Answer

The text clearly says a “crown of righteousness” is stored up for Paul and will be given by the Lord at a future day. The “crown” image fits an award for a completed contest or race, matching verse 7’s struggle-and-course language. The phrase can be read as a crown characterized by righteousness, a crown granted in accordance with righteous judgment, or a crown that consists in righteousness. What the passage does not do is spell out the mechanics of how this relates to Paul’s earlier teaching on grace, or give a detailed description of what the crown looks like in experience.

Question 5

How does Paul widen the scope of hope in verse 8 beyond himself, and what phrase defines the wider group?

Accepted Answer

Paul explicitly says the crown is “not to me only” but also to others. He defines the wider group as “all those who have loved his appearing.” That wording connects the promised outcome to a shared posture toward the Lord’s revealed arrival—welcoming it, longing for it, and valuing it. The text’s emphasis is not on Paul’s uniqueness but on continuity: the same Lord who will judge righteously will also reward others marked by this orientation toward the Lord’s appearing.

Question 6

How do verses 6–8 connect past, present, and future in Paul’s self-description?

Accepted Answer

Paul structures the paragraph around time. In the present (v. 6), his life is already being poured out and his departure is near. Looking back (v. 7), he summarizes his past with completed verbs: he fought, finished, and kept—language of perseverance through a full course. Looking ahead (v. 8), he speaks of a future gift stored up and to be given “at that day” by the Lord as judge. The movement links an approaching death to a retrospective claim of faithfulness and to a forward-looking expectation of divine evaluation and reward.
