Question 1

What does Acts 13:1 tell us about the leadership makeup of the Antioch assembly?

Accepted Answer

Acts 13:1 lists five named leaders and describes them as “prophets and teachers,” which signals recognized leadership and a range of functions (speaking God’s message and giving instruction). The naming also highlights that leadership in Antioch was shared among several people, not centered on only Barnabas or Saul. The brief notes attached to some names (Simeon “called Niger,” Lucius “of Cyrene,” Manaen with a connection to Herod’s circle) also suggest social and geographic variety within the leadership group, fitting Antioch’s character as a major, diverse city.

Question 2

In vv. 2–3, what activities are the leaders/community engaged in before and after the Spirit’s instruction?

Accepted Answer

Before the instruction, the group is described as “serving the Lord and fasting,” suggesting a focused communal setting oriented toward worship and ministry. After the Spirit’s instruction, the community responds with more fasting and prayer, then performs a public act—laying hands on Barnabas and Saul—and finally “sends them away.” The sequence matters: the Spirit’s directive comes in the context of worshipful service; the community answers with discernment-shaped practices (fasting and prayer) and a visible commissioning, not an impulsive departure.

Question 3

What exactly does the Holy Spirit command in v. 2, and what reason is given?

Accepted Answer

The Spirit’s instruction is specific: “Separate Barnabas and Saul for me.” The stated reason is “for the work to which I have called them.” Two points are explicit in the wording. First, the setting apart is “for me,” framing the assignment as belonging to the Spirit’s purpose rather than merely the church’s plan. Second, the “work” is not invented at that moment; the Spirit says he has already called them to it, and the separation aligns with that prior calling.

Question 4

What does the phrase “the work to which I have called them” imply about timing and calling?

Accepted Answer

The line implies a calling that precedes the public commissioning in Antioch. The Spirit speaks as if the calling is already in place (“I have called them”), and the community’s act of setting apart corresponds to that prior reality. The passage does not specify when or how that earlier calling occurred, but it does distinguish between (1) the Spirit’s call and (2) the church’s later, visible action of separating and sending. In other words, the commissioning is presented as responsive confirmation, not as the origin of the call.

Question 5

What is the narrative role of laying on hands in v. 3 within this short account?

Accepted Answer

Within the story, laying on hands is the main visible marker that Barnabas and Saul are being publicly identified for the Spirit-named work. It occurs after fasting and prayer, which frames it as a deliberate communal act rather than a casual farewell. The text does not explain whether this act confers authority, symbolizes blessing, or functions as formal appointment; it simply shows the community’s tangible participation in the separation. It makes the setting apart recognizable to the group and ties the sending to communal agreement.

Question 6

How does Acts 13:1–3 connect community action (“they sent them away”) with divine direction (“the Holy Spirit said”)?

Accepted Answer

The passage holds both together without treating them as rivals. The Spirit provides the directive and claims prior calling; the community responds with practices of devotion and discernment, then carries out a concrete commissioning and release. “They sent them away” shows the Antioch assembly acting as an agent in the process, while the rationale for the mission is grounded in the Spirit’s instruction. The text presents mission initiation as Spirit-led and mission deployment as community-implemented, with the latter aligning to the former.

Question 7

How does this unit function as a turning point in Acts’ broader story?

Accepted Answer

By naming leaders in Antioch and then reporting the Spirit-directed separation of Barnabas and Saul, the passage shifts the story from Antioch’s internal growth to outward movement. It sets up the next section where Barnabas and Saul begin traveling and preaching as a distinct mission (immediately continued in Acts 13:4). This makes Antioch a launching center in the narrative. The hinge is not just geography but authorization: the mission that follows is framed as arising from Spirit direction received in a communal setting.
