Paul proposes a return visit After some time, Paul suggests to Barnabas that they go back to every city where they previously announced the Lord’s message. The stated purpose is pastoral and practical: to see how “the brothers” are doing.
Disagreement over John Mark Barnabas intends to bring John, also called Mark. Paul resists the plan, grounding his objection in Mark’s earlier withdrawal in Pamphylia and his failure to continue with them “to do the work.”

Literary Context
This scene follows the Jerusalem meeting about how non-Jewish believers are to be received and the delivery of its decision to Antioch (Acts 15:1–35). With that controversy addressed, the narrative turns back to travel and strengthening existing groups rather than debating the earlier issue again. The passage functions as a transition: one missionary partnership ends and two lines of travel emerge. It also introduces Silas as Paul’s new coworker for the next stage of the story, setting up the movements that follow in the next chapter.
Historical Context
The setting is the eastern Roman world, where travel between cities by land routes and coastal shipping was common, though slow and risky. Antioch in Syria is a major hub for launching journeys, and communities of Jesus-followers already exist in multiple cities. The mention of Pamphylia points back to an earlier departure from the team (cf. Acts 13:13), suggesting that reliability in travel and public work mattered. Cyprus is Barnabas’s island connection and a reachable destination by sea, while Syria and Cilicia are nearer regions connected by established roads.
Theological Significance
Acts 15:36–41 presents mission work as both outward-moving and upkeep-focused. Paul’s stated goal is not to start something new, but to return to places they already preached “the word of the Lord” and check how the believers are doing (explicit in v.36). The passage also shows that real conflict can happen among trusted leaders: Paul and Barnabas have a serious argument and separate (explicit in v.39).

How to evaluate Mark’s earlier withdrawal. Paul treats Mark’s prior departure from the team as a significant reason not to bring him again (explicit in v.38). The passage does not explain Mark’s motives or the circumstances, so readers differ on whether Mark’s earlier action was a serious failure, a complicated situation, or something in between (inference from what is not said).
What the church’s “commendation” signals. Paul departs “being commended by the brothers to the grace of God” (explicit in v.40). Some read this as the community clearly backing Paul’s judgment over Barnabas’s; others read it as a normal sending-off prayer/support for Paul’s trip without implying Barnabas was rejected (inference).
Why the disagreement exists The disagreement is practical and relational rather than about the earlier Jerusalem decision. Paul prioritizes team reliability for demanding travel and public work, citing Mark’s previous withdrawal in Pamphylia and his not continuing “to do the work” (explicit in v.38). Barnabas wants to take Mark along anyway (explicit in v.37), which implies Barnabas sees Mark as worth bringing—whether because he thinks Mark can now contribute, because he wants to give him another chance, or because of relational ties (these reasons are not stated; inference).
What this passage clearly contributes This scene functions as a turning point: one partnership becomes two mission routes (explicit in vv.39–41). Luke describes the split without pausing to assign blame or offer a direct verdict (inference from narrative restraint). The passage also underlines that strengthening existing communities is part of the mission, not a side task (explicit in vv.36, 41). Finally, the mention of being commended “to the grace of God” frames the next stage as continuing under God’s help rather than merely personal ambition (explicit phrase in v.40).
