Question 1

What details does the text give about the enslaved girl’s condition and why she matters to other people in the story?

Accepted Answer

The girl is described as enslaved and as having “a spirit of divination.” The story immediately connects that condition to an economic system: her owners make “much gain” from her fortune-telling. She therefore matters to them primarily as a source of income, not as a person with agency. The narrative also shows her functioning publicly, following Paul’s group and shouting for “many days,” meaning her presence affects the whole city setting. Those details explain why her deliverance triggers retaliation: it removes what the owners treat as their business asset.

Question 2

What exactly does the girl say about Paul and his companions, and how does the passage treat her words?

Accepted Answer

She repeatedly cries that Paul’s group are “servants of the Most High God” and that they “proclaim… the way of salvation.” The text does not directly label her speech as true or false; it simply reports it and then moves to Paul’s response. What the passage does make clear is that her speech continues over time and that Paul becomes distressed by it. The narrative focus is less on evaluating her statement and more on the spiritual conflict it represents and the public consequences that follow.

Question 3

Who does Paul address in verse 18, and what happens immediately after his command?

Accepted Answer

Paul turns and speaks “to the spirit,” not to the girl. He issues a command “in the name of Jesus Christ” that the spirit come out of her. The result is immediate: “It came out that very hour.” The text presents this as a decisive deliverance event with no gradual process and no negotiation. That quick outcome also drives the next plot turn: the owners recognize right away that their “hope of gain” has vanished, which is why they act against Paul and Silas.

Question 4

According to verses 19–21, what reasons do the owners present to the authorities, and how do those reasons compare with their actual motive?

Accepted Answer

The owners’ stated charges are civic and cultural: Paul and Silas are “agitating” the city and promoting “customs” that Romans cannot lawfully accept or practice. They also highlight ethnicity by calling them “Jews.” But the narrative has already disclosed the owners’ underlying motive: their profit is gone. The passage therefore contrasts a private financial loss with public-facing accusations designed to alarm rulers and mobilize the crowd. Luke shows how economic grievance can be translated into charges of public disorder.

Question 5

What roles do the crowd, the magistrates, and the jailer each play in escalating the conflict in verses 22–24?

Accepted Answer

The crowd joins in against Paul and Silas, creating pressure and momentum. The magistrates then take decisive punitive action: they have their clothes torn off and order a beating with rods, followed by imprisonment. The jailer functions as the final enforcer of the magistrates’ “strict instructions.” He intensifies security by putting them in the inner prison and securing their feet in stocks. Each group contributes: popular outrage, official violence, and custodial restraint. The progression shows how quickly public accusation can become institutional harm.

Question 6

What does the passage suggest about the relationship between spiritual deliverance and social consequences in Philippi?

Accepted Answer

The text places spiritual deliverance and social backlash side by side. The deliverance is depicted as real and immediate (the spirit leaves “that very hour”), but it destabilizes an exploitative income stream tied to the girl’s condition. The social consequences are not presented as a measured legal response; they unfold through seizure, public accusation, crowd participation, and harsh punishment. The passage suggests that when a vulnerable person is entangled in profitable oppression, liberation may provoke retaliation from those who benefit, especially when they can frame it as a civic threat.
