Question 1

How does the passage describe Paul’s method of engagement in the synagogue, and what sources does he use?

Accepted Answer

Luke stresses method as much as content. Paul goes to the synagogue “as was his custom,” and over “three Sabbaths” he “reasons” from the Scriptures (vv. 2–3). The verbs suggest a structured explanation: he opens up the meaning of the texts and tries to show their force, not just assert conclusions. The stated source is “the Scriptures,” which in this setting means Israel’s sacred writings read in the synagogue. The passage’s point is that the claim about Jesus is presented as grounded in those texts, not as a disconnected new philosophy.

Question 2

What are the key claims Paul is said to argue in vv. 2–3, and how are they connected?

Accepted Answer

The text presents a chain of claims. First, Paul argues that “the Christ had to suffer” and “rise again from the dead” (v. 3). Second, he identifies Jesus with that Christ: “This Jesus…is the Christ” (v. 3). The connection is that the suffering-and-rising pattern is treated as necessary to the category “Christ,” and then Jesus is presented as fitting that pattern. Luke does not list the specific passages Paul used, but he does report the structure of the argument: Scripture → necessity of suffering/rising → Jesus as fulfillment.

Question 3

According to v. 4, who responds positively, and what does that suggest about the setting?

Accepted Answer

Three groups are named. “Some” Jews from the synagogue are persuaded; a “great multitude” of “devout Greeks” join; and “not a few of the chief women” join as well (v. 4). This indicates the synagogue was not an isolated ethnic enclave but had connections to non-Jews who attended or sympathized. The mention of leading women suggests the message reached people with social standing and networks. Luke’s summary also implies that “joining” Paul and Silas is visible affiliation, not merely private agreement.

Question 4

What actions do the opponents take in vv. 5–6, and what do those actions imply about their strategy?

Accepted Answer

The opponents recruit “wicked men from the marketplace,” form a crowd, and throw the city into an uproar (v. 5). They target Jason’s house, apparently because Paul and Silas are associated with that household, and they attempt to bring the missionaries out “to the people” (v. 5). When they cannot find them, they seize Jason and other believers and take them before the city authorities (v. 6). The sequence implies escalation: moving from argument inside the synagogue to public pressure, leveraging crowd dynamics, and shifting the dispute into an official civic arena.

Question 5

What are the specific accusations brought in vv. 6–7, and how do they reframe the issue?

Accepted Answer

The accusers claim the missionaries have “turned the world upside down” and have now come to Thessalonica (v. 6). They add that Jason has received them (v. 7), making him a local point of liability. The central reframing is political: “They all act contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus” (v. 7). Whatever the original synagogue debate was about Scripture and the Christ, the charge presented to officials is that the group promotes a rival kingship, which could be heard as disloyalty or sedition under Roman rule.

Question 6

How do the crowd and city authorities respond in vv. 8–9, and what outcome follows?

Accepted Answer

Both the multitude and the city authorities are “troubled” when they hear the charge (v. 8). The text doesn’t say they investigate the theology; the concern is the public claim’s potential to destabilize the city or attract Roman scrutiny. The officials then “take security” from Jason and the rest and release them (v. 9). That outcome suggests a pragmatic attempt to lower risk—creating a financial or legal incentive for the local hosts to prevent further unrest. Luke highlights that the immediate result is not imprisonment but a controlled release under conditions.
