Question 1

What does Paul say he has observed about the Athenians before making any claims about God?

Accepted Answer

Paul begins with observation rather than immediate argument. He addresses “men of Athens” and says he perceives they are “very religious in all things.” He then explains the basis for that perception: he has been walking through the city and looking closely at their “objects of worship.” This opening grounds his speech in what is publicly visible in Athens—altars, shrines, and other worship markers—and signals that his remarks are a response to what they already do, not a detached lecture.

Question 2

How does the altar “TO AN UNKNOWN GOD” function in Paul’s opening?

Accepted Answer

The altar inscription serves as Paul’s bridge into his topic. He highlights a specific, concrete item among their worship practices and uses it to claim a shared starting point: they already acknowledge some divine reality that they cannot clearly identify (“what therefore you worship in ignorance”). Paul then frames his speech as an “announcement” or explanation of that unknown referent. In the logic of the passage, the altar provides both contact (he is not introducing “god” language from scratch) and correction (he will define what is presently unclear).

Question 3

List the explicit claims Paul makes about God in verses 24–25.

Accepted Answer

Paul makes several direct statements: God “made the world and all things in it,” and God is “Lord of heaven and earth.” He adds that this God “dwells not in temples made with hands.” He also says God is not “served by men’s hands, as though he needed anything.” Finally, Paul states the opposite dependence: God “gives to all life and breath, and all things.” The passage presents God as creator, sovereign, not contained, not needy, and as the source of life and every human provision.

Question 4

How does Paul connect ‘God made the world’ to the claims about temples and human service?

Accepted Answer

Paul’s reasoning is: if God is the maker of the world and everything in it, then God cannot be a being whose existence is tied to parts of that world—such as buildings humans construct. “Lord of heaven and earth” supports the same inference: a ruler over all is not limited to one sacred location. In the same way, the creator of all cannot be dependent on creatures to supply necessities. So the claims about temples and being “served” flow from the creator-and-lord claim, not from a side issue about architecture or ritual alone.

Question 5

What contrast does verse 25 draw between what humans might think and what Paul asserts?

Accepted Answer

Verse 25 contrasts two models of the divine-human relationship. One model assumes the divine needs human provision: people “serve” a god with their hands as if the god lacks something—food, resources, maintenance, or support. Paul rejects that model for the God he is describing. The other model is that God is the giver: God provides “life and breath” and, more broadly, “all things.” The contrast is not between having no religious practices and having some, but between supplying the divine and receiving life from God.

Question 6

In verses 22–23, what is the relationship between ‘worship’ and ‘knowledge’ in Paul’s framing?

Accepted Answer

Paul treats worship and knowledge as connected but not identical. The Athenians have worship practices, including an altar that signals reverence toward a deity they cannot specify. Paul describes that as worshiping “in ignorance,” meaning their devotion does not include clear understanding of who the object of worship is. He then positions his speech as supplying what is missing: he will “announce” the one they already acknowledge in a limited way. The text thus sets up a movement from religious practice toward clearer identification and description of God.

Question 7

What does ‘not served by men’s hands’ most directly deny in the context of Athens?

Accepted Answer

In context, it most directly denies that God is like deities whose worship depends on human upkeep—temple housing, ritual provisioning, or offerings conceived as meeting divine needs. The line is paired with “dwells not in temples made with hands,” so the focus is on dependence and containment: humans do not provide God with a place to live or the resources to function. Paul’s positive replacement clarifies the point: God is the one who gives life and everything else, so the direction of dependence runs from God to people, not people to God.
