Corinth was a major Roman city and commercial hub, drawing a mix of local Greeks, Romans, travelers, and immigrant communities, including Jews with a synagogue. Synagogues in the diaspora served as community and worship centers, with recognized leaders who could influence communal response. “Household” language points to an extended social unit that could include family members and dependents. Baptism marks a public step of alignment with the movement, potentially increasing local visibility. “No one will attack you to harm you” (v. 10). Some take this as a broad promise of physical safety from violent harm for the duration of Paul’s Corinth stay. Others take it as a narrower promise: opposition may occur, but it will not succeed in producing the kind of harm that would stop the mission there.
“With all his house” (v. 8). Some understand “household” language to imply a group response centered on the household head, with dependents included in the description. Others emphasize that it still describes genuine believing within the household, even if Luke does not detail each person’s path.
The passage is brief and uses compressed narrative language. Phrases like “many people” and “attack…to harm” can be read in more than one way because Luke does not define the time frame, the kind of harm in view, or the mechanics of household belief. Interpreters therefore infer details from broader patterns in Acts (frequent opposition, repeated divine protection, and periodic mentions of households).
This scene ties together four explicit claims: (1) the message gains traction in Corinth, including a prominent synagogue leader (v. 8); (2) belief is portrayed as arising from hearing, and baptism follows as a public marker (v. 8); (3) Paul’s mission is sustained by a divine message that addresses fear and mandates continued speech (vv. 9–10); and (4) the outcome is not merely more converts but an 18‑month period of structured teaching “among them” (v. 11).
