Guard yourselves and the flock; danger will come Paul tells the elders to watch themselves and the entire “flock.” He describes them as placed into oversight by the Holy Spirit, and he frames their task as caring for God’s gathered community, portrayed as costly and precious. He then explains why vigilance is needed: after he leaves, destructive outsiders will come in, and even insiders will arise and speak twisted things in order to attract followers and pull disciples away.
Stay alert by remembering Paul’s long, emotional warnings Because threats are real, Paul urges them to stay awake and watch. He anchors this in memory: for three years he kept warning “night and day,” and he did it with tears. The point is not only duration but intensity—he treated danger to the community as serious and personal.
Paul entrusts them to God and to the message of grace Paul shifts from warning to encouragement. Literary Context
This passage sits within Paul’s farewell speech to the elders from Ephesus, delivered at Miletus (Acts 20:17–38). Just before these verses, Paul reviews his ministry among them and declares he has not held back from teaching what was beneficial (Acts 20:18–27). The logic then moves from Paul’s past example to the leaders’ future responsibility: because Paul is leaving, they must guard themselves and the community, anticipating threats that will distort and divide. The section ends by pointing to Paul’s pattern of work and generosity as a model to imitate (Acts 20:33–35).
Historical Context
Acts presents these events during Paul’s travels through the eastern Roman provinces, when local communities met in homes and depended heavily on trusted leaders for teaching and coordination. Elders in a city could face pressure from traveling teachers, rival interpretations, and social incentives tied to money, patronage, and honor. Paul’s emphasis on not taking silver or clothing reflects common concerns about religious entrepreneurs who profited from followers. His warning that some threats will come “from among your own selves” fits the reality that conflicts often began inside groups as influential insiders gained a following and pulled others away.

He finishes with a remembered saying of the Lord Jesus, summarizing the ethic he wants them to keep in mind: giving brings greater blessing than receiving.
Paul speaks to local elders and frames leadership as spiritual oversight: the Holy Spirit placed them as overseers, and their responsibility is to shepherd the whole community (v. 28). The community is portrayed as precious and costly, described as “purchased with blood” (v. 28).
Paul expects real danger after his departure: harmful teachers will come from outside, and some will arise from within and twist teaching to gather personal followings (vv. 29–30). He supports this warning by pointing to his own long, emotional pattern of warning (v. 31).
He also emphasizes God’s continuing support: he entrusts them to God and “the word of his grace,” which has power to build them up and grant a share in the promised inheritance among the sanctified (v. 32). He ends by highlighting financial integrity and generosity: he did not seek their possessions, worked to provide for needs, and held up giving to support “the weak,” citing a remembered saying of Jesus (vv. 33–35; Acts 20:35).
“Purchased with his own blood” (v. 28). Some read the verse as directly identifying the one who shed blood as God himself (so the line strongly links Jesus’ death to God’s own action/identity). Others argue the wording or phrasing should be understood in a way that points to the Lord/Messiah’s blood rather than speaking of God having blood, while still keeping the point that the community was bought at great cost.
“The assembly of the Lord and God” (v. 28). Because ancient copies vary, some translations read “church of God,” while others read “church of the Lord,” or similar combinations. The basic meaning (the community belongs to God/the Lord and must be shepherded) remains stable, but the exact wording affects how directly the line connects “God” with the “blood” language.
Who are “the weak” (v. 35)? Many take this mainly as materially needy or economically vulnerable people. Others think it includes broader vulnerability (people easily exploited or pressured), with financial support as a central example.
The main differences arise from two pressures noted in Stage A: (1) manuscript wording differences in v. 28 (“Lord,” “God,” or a combination), and (2) how readers relate “blood” language to God-language in the same sentence. In v. 35, the question is semantic: “weak” can refer to financial need, social vulnerability, or both.
This section ties church leadership to divine appointment (“the Holy Spirit made you overseers”) and defines its task as protective care of the whole community (v. 28). It treats internal distortion as a predictable threat (vv. 29–30) and shows that vigilance is sustained by remembered teaching and warning (v. 31).
