Vision in the temple and urgent exit Paul says that after he returned to Jerusalem, while praying in the temple, he entered an altered state and “saw” the Lord speaking. The instruction is urgent: leave Jerusalem quickly. The stated reason is that the people there will not accept Paul’s testimony about Jesus.

Literary Context
This passage sits inside Paul’s defense speech to a hostile crowd in Jerusalem (Acts 22), where he recounts his story to explain why he lives and speaks as he does. Immediately before, he has described his encounter with Jesus and his reception of instructions through Ananias (22:6–16). Now he adds a later temple episode to show that his outward mission was not self-chosen or impulsive, but came through a specific redirection while he was in Jerusalem itself. Immediately after, the mention of “Gentiles” triggers the crowd’s renewed outrage (22:22).
Historical Context
The setting assumes Jerusalem’s temple is functioning and remains the central public place of Jewish prayer and identity under Roman oversight. Paul describes himself participating in temple prayer, aligning his story with recognizably Jewish practice even while recounting conflict with some Jerusalem hearers. References to synagogues, imprisonment, and beatings reflect organized local discipline and communal enforcement within Jewish communities. Mentioning Stephen recalls an earlier public killing connected with disputes about Jesus within Jerusalem (Acts 7–8), and it places Paul’s past actions within that same contested city environment.
Theological Significance
Acts 22:17–21 presents Paul’s mission as something directed by the risen Lord, not merely a personal strategy. In Paul’s telling, the setting is strongly Jewish: he is back in Jerusalem, praying in the temple, and speaking to a Jerusalem crowd. How final is “they will not receive” (v. 18)? Some read it as a blanket statement about Jerusalem as a whole: this city is decisively closed to Paul’s witness. Others read it as situational: in that moment and atmosphere, Paul will not be received, so he must leave quickly even if some individuals in Jerusalem might still believe.
What is Paul doing in vv. 19–20—arguing back or explaining himself? Some take Paul’s response as an attempted appeal: he thinks his notorious past should make him especially persuasive to Jerusalem. Others think it is mainly narrative self-disclosure: Paul is explaining why he would naturally expect to be heard, which highlights the surprising nature of the Lord’s redirect.
The text gives the Lord’s reason (“they will not receive…”) but does not spell out whether this refers to every person or to the broader public response. Likewise, Paul’s “I said…” could be read as pushback in the moment or as a rhetorical way of showing how strong his prior ties to Jerusalem were. Luke records the exchange without explicit commentary on Paul’s tone or intent.
Explicitly, Paul claims: (1) he was in the temple praying, (2) he entered a trance and saw the Lord, (3) the Lord ordered him to leave Jerusalem quickly, (4) the reason given was non-reception of Paul’s testimony about Jesus, and (5) the Lord redirected Paul “far from here” to the Gentiles (v. 21). Theologically by inference, the passage supports the idea that the outward expansion of the message to the Gentiles is portrayed as guided by divine direction rather than as an abandonment of Jewish space or practice. It also frames rejection and redirection as part of the story’s movement, not as a late correction after failure.
