Question 1

What time and place markers does Paul give for this event, and why might those details matter within his speech?

Accepted Answer

Paul locates the episode “when I had returned to Jerusalem” and specifically “while I prayed in the temple” (vv. 17–18). Those details matter because they place the direction to go outward in the heart of Jewish religious space rather than outside it. Within a defense speech to a hostile Jerusalem crowd, the setting helps Paul show that he is not describing a mission born from contempt for Jerusalem or the temple. It also adds a chronological layer after his earlier encounter with Jesus (vv. 6–16), indicating that his calling continued to be shaped through later guidance.

Question 2

How does the passage describe Paul’s experience in v. 17, and what does it claim (and not claim) about how the message came to him?

Accepted Answer

Paul says he “fell into a trance” and “saw” the Lord speaking (v. 17–18). The text claims a vision-like encounter during prayer, presented as a real communication from the Lord with specific content. It does not explain the mechanics of the trance, how long it lasted, or how it relates to ordinary perception. It also does not portray it as Paul’s self-generated insight; the direction is framed as initiated by the Lord. The emphasis is on the clarity of the instruction: urgency, reason, and destination.

Question 3

What is the content and reasoning of the Lord’s instruction in vv. 18 and 21?

Accepted Answer

The Lord’s first instruction is urgent: Paul must leave Jerusalem quickly (v. 18). The reason given is relational and receptive: “they will not receive testimony concerning me from you,” meaning Paul’s witness about Jesus will not be accepted there. The final instruction (v. 21) is even more directive: “Depart,” because the Lord will “send” Paul “far from here to the Gentiles.” Together, these statements present both a negative reason (non-reception in Jerusalem) and a positive commissioning (being sent outward to non-Jewish audiences).

Question 4

How do vv. 19–20 function in the dialogue—what points does Paul raise, and what effect do they have on the narrative?

Accepted Answer

Paul responds by pointing to what the Jerusalem audience already “knows” about him: he previously targeted believers in synagogues, imprisoning and beating them (v. 19). He then names a central example tied to Jerusalem’s memory—Stephen’s death—saying he was present, approved of it, and guarded the killers’ cloaks (v. 20). In the narrative, these details heighten the irony: the very history Paul thinks should make him credible does not change the Lord’s assessment. It also foregrounds the seriousness of Paul’s past and the costliness of his change.

Question 5

What does this passage suggest about the relationship between Paul’s past actions and his present calling, based strictly on what is said?

Accepted Answer

Explicitly, Paul links his past to his present by using it as the reason he expects Jerusalem to listen: his former persecution is public and memorable (vv. 19–20). The Lord, however, does not treat that past as a qualification that will win Jerusalem; instead, the Lord insists Paul must leave because the testimony will not be received (v. 18). Then the Lord states a new direction: Paul will be sent far away to the Gentiles (v. 21). The passage does not present Paul’s past as excused or minimized; it is stated plainly as violent and complicit in death, and then placed under a new commission.

Question 6

How does this unit (vv. 17–21) help explain the crowd reaction that follows in v. 22 (immediately after this passage)?

Accepted Answer

Within Paul’s speech, the story builds to the word “Gentiles” (v. 21), which is the stated destination of Paul’s sending. The narrative flow suggests this is a trigger point: Paul frames his outward mission as the Lord’s command, not a personal preference, but the mention of Gentiles makes the tension explicit. Even without quoting v. 22, the setup is clear: Paul claims divine authorization for a move that many in his audience find unacceptable. The unit therefore functions as both explanation (why Paul went outward) and escalation (why the speech provokes renewed outrage).
