How to understand the “third hour of the night” and the mounts. Many take it as a specific nighttime departure time (commonly approximated late evening). Others think it signals “well into the night” without requiring a precise modern conversion. Likewise, some read the “animals” as primarily for Paul (so he can travel faster and be less vulnerable), while others allow that more than one mount could be in view, though Paul is the focus.
The disagreements come from (a) an uncommon Greek term for the armed group (spearmen) and (b) ancient timekeeping and travel conventions that do not map neatly onto modern hours, plus the brief way the text mentions “animals” without spelling out exact numbers.
