Paul is responding to accusations from some Jewish leaders, and he aims to show continuity between his earlier life and his present message. The logic moves from personal credibility (known background) to the real point of dispute (hope tied to God’s promises), and then to the key contested claim (resurrection). The question in v. 8 sets up the rest of the speech, where Paul narrates his earlier opposition and subsequent change of course.
Historical Context
Paul speaks as a Jew trained within recognized Jewish groups, and he addresses a hearing shaped by Roman administration. Judea and neighboring regions were under imperial oversight, and local disputes could become matters for governors when they threatened public order. Pharisees were known for careful law-observance and for expecting future resurrection, unlike some other Jewish elites. Paul’s appeal to “our fathers” and “twelve tribes” uses shared ancestral language to argue that his position belongs within Israel’s long-standing hopes, even while the immediate conflict is with specific accusers.
Theological Significance
Paul starts by grounding his credibility in a publicly recognizable story: many Jews knew his life from youth, including his time in Jerusalem (vv. 4–5). Two main details invite different readings:
What exactly is “the hope of the promise”? The text does not spell out the promise’s contents. Some readers think Paul is summarizing the whole sweep of Israel’s expectation (God’s final rescue and renewal for his people), with resurrection as a key part. Others take it more narrowly as the specific promise of resurrection and related end-time restoration.
Who is the “you” in v. 8 (“with you”)? Some take it as aimed mainly at Agrippa personally; others see it as directed to the whole court (Agrippa, Roman officials, and listeners), or even as a general rhetorical “you.”
Why the disagreement exists The passage compresses big ideas into short phrases—“promise,” “hope,” “twelve tribes,” and “with you”—without detailed explanation. Because Paul goes on to speak about the risen Jesus later in the speech, readers naturally connect “promise/hope” to resurrection, but the exact scope of the promise is inferred rather than directly defined in vv. 4–8.
What this passage clearly contributes The text clearly presents Paul’s message as continuous with Israel’s story, not a break from it: his earlier Pharisaic life establishes that continuity, and the “hope” is framed as rooted in God’s promise to the ancestors (vv. 5–7). It also highlights that the conflict is fundamentally about whether resurrection is believable if God is truly powerful (v. 8). In Acts, this fits the wider pattern where the resurrection becomes the key flashpoint between Paul and his opponents, even when he insists he is speaking from within Israel’s hope.
