The question and Stephen’s opening address The high priest asks whether the accusations are true. Stephen addresses the audience respectfully as “brothers and fathers” and asks them to listen. He begins with God, calling him “the God of glory,” and says God appeared to Abraham while Abraham was still in Mesopotamia, before living in Haran.
The command to leave and Abraham’s movements Stephen quotes God’s direction to Abraham: leave his land and relatives and go to a land God will show. Abraham departs from the land of the Chaldeans and lives in Haran. After Abraham’s father dies, God moves Abraham into “this land,” the one Stephen’s audience currently inhabits.

Literary Context
This section opens Stephen’s long defense speech before the Jerusalem council, following accusations connected to the temple and the law (immediately prior to this scene). The high priest’s question in v.1 functions as an invitation to answer the charges. Stephen responds not with a quick denial but with a retelling of Israel’s story, starting with Abraham. The narrative choice sets the terms of his reply: he will talk about God’s actions across places and generations, and he will trace how God’s promises and directions moved the family line forward to the patriarchs.
Historical Context
The setting is Jerusalem under Roman rule, where the high priest and council had authority over many internal Jewish matters, especially those tied to temple life and public teaching. Stephen, associated with Greek-speaking Jewish believers, is brought before this body and questioned. Stephen’s opening relies on shared ancestral memory: Abraham’s origins in Mesopotamia, later residence in Haran, and eventual connection to the land of Canaan. His references to circumcision and the patriarchs assume the council accepts these as central markers of identity and continuity across generations.
Theological Significance

God’s guidance unfolds through movement and promise: Abraham is told to leave his land and relatives for a land God will show (v.3), and he relocates in stages until he comes to the land the council “now” inhabits (v.4).
Stephen also stresses that Abraham’s relationship with God begins with promise rather than possession. Abraham receives no property in the land—not even a minimal foothold—yet God promises future possession for Abraham and his “seed” (v.5). God’s promise includes a foretelling of suffering and delay: Abraham’s descendants will be outsiders, enslaved and mistreated for “four hundred years” (v.6), and God will judge the oppressing nation and bring them out (v.7). The unit closes with God giving the covenant sign of circumcision and the line of descent from Abraham to the patriarchs (v.8).
Some disagreement exists about how to line up Stephen’s compressed timeline with Genesis, especially the sequence “from there, when his father was dead, God moved him into this land” (v.4). Some read Stephen as giving a strict chronology that must match a specific reading of Abraham’s age and Terah’s death in Genesis. Others think Stephen is summarizing the story in a way that highlights stages of movement without intending to settle every chronological detail.
There is also debate about what “this place” refers to in v.7 (“serve me in this place”). Some take it to mean the promised land (Canaan), connecting the Exodus to eventual settlement. Others take it to refer to the place of worship associated with the Exodus story (the mountain where Israel worships after deliverance), with Stephen quoting God’s words in their original setting.
Stephen is giving a speech, not a verse-by-verse retelling of Genesis and Exodus. He compresses events, uses quotation-like wording (vv.3, 7), and connects past events to the present audience (“where you are now living,” v.4). Because of that, readers differ on whether details like “when his father was dead” are meant as precise chronology or as narrative linkage, and whether “this place” should be heard from Stephen’s courtroom setting or from the quoted story’s setting.
Explicitly, the passage presents God as the initiator: God appears, commands, promises, foretells, judges, and gives covenant signs (vv.2–8). It also frames Israel’s identity as rooted in God’s promises across time, not in immediate land ownership: Abraham has promise without inheritance (v.5) and descendants whose path includes exile and oppression before deliverance (vv.6–7). Finally, Stephen foregrounds that God’s presence and guidance are not confined to one location, since God’s first decisive action in this story occurs in Mesopotamia (v.2) and continues through multiple places (vv.3–4).
