Question 1

What triggers the apostles’ involvement from Jerusalem, and what does their response consist of?

Accepted Answer

The trigger is a report: the apostles in Jerusalem “heard that Samaria had received the word of God” (v.14). Their response is not to send a message or letter but to send two leading representatives, Peter and John, to Samaria. The text highlights both oversight and connection: Jerusalem leadership takes notice and physically comes to the new Samaritan believers. This helps the reader see Samaria’s reception not as an isolated event but as something recognized by the central eyewitness leaders. The response is relational and public, not merely administrative.

Question 2

In verses 15–17, what actions do Peter and John take, in what order?

Accepted Answer

The narrative lays out a clear sequence. First, they arrive in Samaria (v.15). Second, they pray for the believers with a specific aim: “that they might receive the Holy Spirit” (v.15). Third, the text provides an explanation about the Spirit’s prior absence (v.16). Fourth, they lay their hands on the believers (v.17). Finally, the result is stated: “they received the Holy Spirit” (v.17). Luke’s order matters because it frames laying on of hands as part of the immediate context in which Spirit reception occurs.

Question 3

What does verse 16 explicitly say about the Samaritans’ prior status before Peter and John arrived?

Accepted Answer

Verse 16 makes two explicit claims about their condition before the apostles’ prayer and laying on of hands. First, “as yet [the Spirit] had fallen on none of them,” indicating a lack of the Spirit’s “falling” at that point. Second, “they had only been baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus,” meaning their baptism was already a completed event connected to allegiance to Jesus. The verse therefore distinguishes between being baptized into Jesus’ name and the Spirit having “fallen on” them, without explaining the reason for the delay.

Question 4

How does the passage connect Samaritan belief, baptism, and receiving the Holy Spirit?

Accepted Answer

The passage connects them by both affirmation and distinction. It affirms Samaria’s positive response: they “received the word of God” (v.14), and it assumes they were genuine participants in the movement centered on Jesus, since they were “baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus” (v.16). At the same time, it distinguishes this from the Spirit’s “falling on” them, which had not happened yet (v.16). The Spirit is then received after apostolic prayer and laying on of hands (v.15, v.17). The text shows a sequence but does not spell out a universal rule.

Question 5

What is the stated purpose of Peter and John’s prayer, and how does the narrator support that purpose?

Accepted Answer

The stated purpose is direct: they “prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Spirit” (v.15). The narrator supports this by adding an explanatory note in v.16: the Spirit had not yet “fallen on” any of them, even though they had been baptized into Jesus’ name. That explanation justifies why prayer aimed at receiving the Spirit is needed in this moment. The narrative then confirms the prayer’s aim is met after the laying on of hands: “they received the Holy Spirit” (v.17).

Question 6

What role does ‘laying on of hands’ play in the storyline of these verses?

Accepted Answer

Within these verses, laying on of hands is the last described apostolic action before the stated result. After praying (v.15) and after the narrator explains the Spirit had not yet fallen (v.16), Peter and John “laid their hands on them” (v.17). Then the text immediately says “they received the Holy Spirit” (v.17). The passage does not explicitly define whether laying on of hands is a mechanism, a sign of recognition, or simply the moment God chose to act; it does clearly mark the timing and public nature of the event.

Question 7

How does this episode function in the broader story movement from Jerusalem outward?

Accepted Answer

Acts 8 is about the message moving beyond Jerusalem after believers are scattered (Acts 8:1–4). Philip’s ministry in Samaria shows major growth outside Judea, and Acts 8:14–17 inserts the Jerusalem apostles into that expansion. By sending Peter and John, the narrative links the Samaritan believers to the original apostolic circle. The Spirit’s reception occurs in the presence of these representatives, which publicly connects Samaria to the same Spirit-driven community. Immediately afterward, Acts continues the outward movement with another boundary-crossing encounter (the Ethiopian official, Acts 8:26–40).
