Question 1

What information does Amos 1:1 give about who Amos is and where he is from?

Accepted Answer

Amos 1:1 introduces Amos by name and connects him to Tekoa. It also places him “among the herdsmen,” which frames him as coming from a rural working setting rather than from royal or priestly circles. The verse does not give his family line or official title; it highlights his location and occupation group. That kind of introduction prepares the reader to hear his message as coming from outside the usual centers of influence, while still being anchored to a known place and a recognizable social role.

Question 2

How does the phrase “the words…which he saw” shape how the reader should understand the book’s message?

Accepted Answer

The verse calls the content “words,” suggesting spoken proclamation, but also says Amos “saw” it, which implies revelation received rather than invented. Put together, the book presents itself as reported prophetic communication: Amos receives something disclosed to him and then communicates it in verbal form. The wording does not explain the exact experience (vision, insight, or another form), but it does frame the message as something given to Amos and then delivered, not simply personal reflection or political commentary.

Question 3

What does “concerning Israel” most directly claim in this opening?

Accepted Answer

“Concerning Israel” directly states the subject focus of what Amos saw: Israel is the main addressee or topic. In this context, “Israel” most naturally points to the northern kingdom, especially since the verse also names Jeroboam son of Joash as king of Israel. At the same time, the text’s opening has Amos from Tekoa (in Judah) speaking words that will matter across the broader people and land. The phrase functions as a headline for the book’s target rather than a detailed outline of every audience.

Question 4

Why do the time markers (two kings and “two years before the earthquake”) matter for interpretation?

Accepted Answer

The time markers place Amos’s message in a specific historical window: during Uzziah’s reign in Judah and Jeroboam’s reign in Israel, and shortly before a memorable earthquake. This does several things. It signals that the message is not timeless wisdom detached from events; it is tied to public history. It also implies an audience that could locate the message relative to well-known leadership and a major remembered disaster. The earthquake note especially functions like a shared reference point for dating and seriousness, even without naming the quake in detail.

Question 5

In Amos 1:2, what is communicated by describing Yahweh as roaring “from Zion” and speaking “from Jerusalem”?

Accepted Answer

The imagery communicates force and authority. A “roar” evokes a sound that demands attention and signals danger or power. By locating the roar in Zion/Jerusalem, the text portrays Yahweh’s voice as coming from a recognized sacred and political center, even as the book addresses Israel. The point is not that God is confined to that city, but that the speech is public, commanding, and connected to the covenant center associated with Yahweh’s rule. It sets an expectant tone for judgment language that follows in the book.

Question 6

What do the mourning pastures and the withering of Carmel add to the opening proclamation?

Accepted Answer

They connect Yahweh’s speech to effects in the real world, especially the land that supports life and economy. “Pastures…mourn” is personification that pictures agricultural distress in emotional terms, highlighting loss and vulnerability for those who depend on grazing. “The top of Carmel…withers” extends the picture to a prominent, fertile region, suggesting that the impact is not minor or localized. Whether taken as literal drought or vivid effect-language, the imagery communicates breadth: the consequences reach from ordinary grazing lands to celebrated highlands.
