The Amorite removed completely Yahweh says he destroyed “the Amorite” in front of Israel. The Amorite is described as unusually impressive—tall like cedars and strong like oaks—so the defeat is portrayed as decisive and surprising. The line about destroying “fruit from above” and “roots from beneath” paints total removal: no present product and no future regrowth.
Exodus, wilderness leading, and land possession Yahweh adds that he brought Israel up out of Egypt and then guided them for forty years in the wilderness. The stated purpose is “to possess the land of the Amorite,” connecting deliverance and long-term guidance to eventual settlement. Literary Context
These verses sit inside Amos’s larger accusation against Israel in chapter 2, where the prophet moves from judging surrounding nations to addressing Israel with heavier expectations. Just before this section, Israel is charged with exploiting the vulnerable and corrupting worship and justice (2:6–8). Verses 9–11 then function as a reminder: the same God they are offending is the one who acted powerfully for them in the past and who also provided ongoing guidance through prophets and Nazirites. The closing question invites agreement and sets up further confrontation that follows.
Historical Context
Amos speaks to the northern kingdom of Israel in the eighth century BC, a time of economic strength and confidence under Jeroboam II. In that setting, recalling older national memories (Egypt, wilderness years, conquest of land) anchors the present community in a shared story of origins and settlement. The “Amorite” here represents earlier inhabitants associated with the pre-Israelite control of the land; describing them as cedar-tall and oak-strong heightens the sense of an unlikely victory. Mentioning prophets and Nazirites points to recognizable social and religious roles within Israel’s own communities, not foreign imports.

It also explicitly claims that Yahweh supplied internal resources for Israel’s life with him—prophets and Nazirites drawn from Israel’s own people.
By implication (building on the surrounding accusation in Amos 2), these reminders heighten Israel’s accountability: the wrongdoing in the immediate context is not happening in ignorance but in the face of a well-known history of deliverance and divinely given guidance. The closing question (“Is it not even thus…?”) frames the whole reminder as a case that Israel is expected to concede as true.
