Crop damage and locust loss Yahweh says he struck them with conditions that ruin crops (“blasting and mildew”). Even where there were many cultivated places—gardens, vineyards, fig trees, and olive trees—an invading locust swarm consumed them. The point is not just that losses happened, but that Yahweh claims direct responsibility for the blows. The refrain concludes that the people still did not “return” to him.
Plague, sword, and humiliation Yahweh says he sent a pestilence “like Egypt,” calling up a known pattern of devastating disease. He adds that their young men fell by the sword, and their horses were taken away, describing both death and military weakening. The “stench of your camp” rising into their noses depicts the physical reality of bodies, sickness, and defeat. Again the refrain: they did not return.
Overthrow like Sodom, yet some rescued Yahweh says he overthrew some of their cities, comparing it to God’s overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah—language of sudden, severe destruction. Literary Context
