Question 1

Who is being addressed in Amos 6:1, and what does the verse say about their social role?

Accepted Answer

The verse addresses people who are “at ease” in Zion and “secure” in Samaria’s hill country. It further identifies them as “notable” men among the “chief of the nations,” and says the “house of Israel” comes to them. These phrases present them as recognized leaders—people others look to for guidance, decisions, or example. The problem is not simply that they live in a safe place, but that their public standing is paired with a relaxed confidence that Amos treats as spiritually and morally dangerous.

Question 2

What is the force of the word “woe” at the start of this unit?

Accepted Answer

“Woe” functions as a public announcement of serious trouble ahead. In this passage it acts like a spotlight: it singles out a specific group (secure leaders) and frames their situation as urgent, not minor. The “woe” does not merely express sadness; it signals that their current ease is on a collision course with coming judgment. The rest of the unit supports that warning by challenging their assumptions of safety (v.2) and exposing their moral denial and violence (v.3).

Question 3

Why does Amos direct the audience to look at Calneh, Hamath, and Gath (Amos 6:2)?

Accepted Answer

Amos uses these cities as a comparison exercise. He tells the leaders to “pass” to them and “see,” then asks whether those kingdoms are better than “these kingdoms” (Israel/Judah) or whether their territory is greater. The implied point is that well-known centers of strength can decline, lose borderland, or fail to protect their people. By invoking recognizable places, Amos challenges the leaders’ sense of exceptional immunity: their confidence is not justified simply because they are currently prosperous or influential.

Question 4

What does the border/territory question in verse 2 imply about the leaders’ confidence?

Accepted Answer

The question—whether those other kingdoms are “better” or have a greater border than “your border”—pushes the leaders to measure their situation realistically. Amos does not need to prove Israel’s border is smaller; the rhetorical effect works if the borders are comparable or if Israel’s border seems impressive. Either way, the point is that size, reputation, and territory are not guarantees. The leaders’ confidence is portrayed as misplaced because they treat present strength as permanent, despite examples around them of strong places that did not last.

Question 5

What are the two actions described in Amos 6:3, and how do they relate to each other?

Accepted Answer

Verse 3 holds two actions together in tension. First, the leaders “put far away the evil day,” meaning they mentally postpone serious trouble, treating it as distant or irrelevant. Second, they “cause the seat of violence to come near,” meaning their governance and social practices make oppression more established and present. The relationship is ironic: by denying accountability and consequences, they create conditions where violence becomes normal and entrenched. The verse links moral denial with systemic harm rather than treating them as separate issues.

Question 6

What does “seat of violence” most naturally communicate within this passage?

Accepted Answer

Within the flow of the unit, “seat of violence” sounds like an image for violence becoming settled and authorized—having a “place” from which it operates. Since the passage targets “notable” leaders, the phrase naturally fits decision-making spaces: policies, courts, councils, or any center where injustice can be endorsed and made routine. At minimum, the phrase indicates more than isolated wrongdoing; it suggests an established social order that brings harm close to everyday life, even while leaders claim or feel secure.

Question 7

How does the mention of Zion and Samaria shape the scope of Amos’s critique?

Accepted Answer

Zion and Samaria name two leadership centers: Zion representing Jerusalem/Judah’s center, and Samaria the northern capital. By pairing them, the text portrays complacent security as a shared leadership problem rather than a single-city flaw. Some readers take this as a direct warning to both kingdoms’ elites. Others see “Zion” as a broader symbol for the religious-political establishment, used to intensify the critique. Either way, the verse expands the target beyond private citizens to include influential figures across Israel’s public life.
