Question 1

In verse 1, what sequence of actions does the Lord announce, and what outcome is emphasized?

Accepted Answer

Verse 1 moves in a tight sequence: Amos sees the Lord beside the altar; the Lord commands a strike; the thresholds shake; the structure’s pieces fall “on the head” of those present; then any remaining “last of them” are killed by the sword. The outcome is emphasized with two absolute lines: no one will successfully flee, and no one will escape. The verse combines collapse imagery with battlefield language (“sword”) to communicate that the judgment is thorough, affecting both the gathered crowd and any survivors.

Question 2

How do verses 2–4 use repeated “though/even if” statements to make their point?

Accepted Answer

The repeated “though” introduces imagined escape routes, each one extreme. The pattern is consistent: a far-off place is named, then God’s action reaches them “there.” The places cover vertical extremes (Sheol and heaven), a well-known hiding region (Carmel), the sea’s depths, and even forced migration (captivity). The repetition builds a cumulative effect: every new scenario confirms the same conclusion from verse 1—humanly plausible escape plans do not work because the deciding factor is God’s pursuing action, not distance or concealment.

Question 3

What do “Sheol” and “heaven” contribute to the meaning in verse 2?

Accepted Answer

Sheol and heaven function as opposite ends of the imagined universe: the deepest place below and the highest place above. The text’s claim is explicit: if they dig into Sheol, God’s “hand” will take them; if they climb to heaven, God will bring them down. The point is not merely that God is aware of them, but that God can reach and seize them from either extreme. The language turns “up” and “down” into equally ineffective directions for escape.

Question 4

What is the role of Carmel and the “bottom of the sea” in verse 3?

Accepted Answer

Carmel and the sea-bottom expand the range of hiding places from cosmic extremes to concrete, imaginable refuges. Carmel was known as a prominent, wooded highland area—plausible cover for someone trying to disappear. The sea-bottom is even more inaccessible, described as hiding from God’s “sight.” In both cases, God says he will “search and take” them from Carmel, and from the sea he will “command the serpent” to bite. The verse portrays pursuit that penetrates both land and sea.

Question 5

In verse 4, why is captivity not treated as a form of survival or safety?

Accepted Answer

Verse 4 imagines a grim but realistic scenario: being taken into captivity “before their enemies.” In many situations, exile could mean at least survival compared with death in battle. Here, however, captivity does not function as refuge. God says he will “command the sword” and it will kill them even there. The verse concludes with God setting his eyes on them “for evil, and not for good,” stressing that the direction of events is adverse rather than protective, even in exile.

Question 6

What explicit claims does this passage make about God’s agency (hand, command, eyes)?

Accepted Answer

The passage repeatedly attributes agency to God in direct verbs: God’s “hand” takes; God brings down; God searches; God commands the serpent; God commands the sword; God sets his eyes on them for harm. These are explicit textual claims, not implied conclusions. They present judgment as intentional and directed rather than accidental. Even when other agents appear (serpent, sword), they operate under God’s command, which reinforces the passage’s central point: outcomes do not depend on geography or circumstance but on God’s declared action.

Question 7

How does the setting “beside the altar” shape the passage’s message within Amos?

Accepted Answer

Beginning at an altar places the vision in a religious space associated with worship and, for many, safety or divine favor. The first act of judgment occurring there signals that sacred settings do not automatically protect people from accountability. Within Amos, this fits the repeated critique that religious activity can coexist with injustice and that such worship does not neutralize judgment. The passage does not detail specific sins here, but it assumes the audience knows the broader charges in the book and frames the altar as the starting point of an unavoidable reckoning.
