The Lord at the altar; the strike; no survivors Amos sees the Lord standing beside an altar and issuing an order to strike the upper parts so the building’s supports shake and the pieces fall downward. The collapse is aimed “on the head” of the people there, portraying the structure itself as an instrument of lethal judgment. Any remaining survivors (“the last of them”) are then said to be killed by the sword, and the verse finishes with an absolute denial of escape: no one will successfully flee or slip away.
