This prayer follows the letter’s opening greeting and thanksgiving, where Paul reports hearing of the Colossians’ trust and love and credits Epaphras for sharing news about them. The request centers on understanding God’s will, but it is aimed at a transformed way of life: pleasing the Lord, doing good, and enduring hardship well. The closing lines (vv. 12–14) shift from requests to grateful celebration of what the Father has already done, setting up the next section’s focus on the Son’s greatness (1:15–20).
Historical Context
Colossae was a smaller city in the Lycus Valley of Asia Minor within the Roman Empire, connected to nearby Laodicea and Hierapolis. The letter reflects a networked movement: Paul writes from a distance, relying on coworkers like Epaphras to found and report on local communities. The region’s religious and cultural mix meant people encountered many competing claims about spiritual help, moral guidance, and access to the divine; Paul’s prayer frames what “real growth” should look like in that setting. The language of “kingdom,” “power,” and “inheritance” also fits an imperial world where rule, citizenship, and belonging were everyday realities under Rome.

Gratitude for the Father’s decisive action The prayer turns to thanksgiving: the Father has made “us” fit to share in the inheritance belonging to the saints “in light.” Paul then describes a rescue-and-transfer: deliverance from the authority of darkness and relocation into the kingdom of the Father’s beloved Son. In the Son, “we have redemption,” described as coming “through his blood,” and this redemption is further explained as “the forgiveness of sins.”
Paul’s prayer links inner understanding with outward life. He asks God to fill the Colossians with insight into “his will” (v.9), and he states the purpose: a life that fits the Lord—fully pleasing him (v.10). That “worthy walk” is described in observable terms: doing good works that bear fruit, and continuing to grow in knowing God (v.10).
The strength God provides is aimed at endurance, not control. The power requested is “according to” God’s own might (v.11), but it is expressed as patience and perseverance, marked by joy (v.11).
The prayer ends by thanking the Father for decisive deliverance already described as accomplished: he has made believers fit to share the “inheritance” associated with “light” (v.12), rescued them from the authority of darkness, and transferred them into the Son’s kingdom (v.13). What “knowledge of his will” mainly means (v.9). Some read it primarily as guidance for decisions (what God wants them to do in particular situations). Others read it mainly as moral and theological insight—understanding God’s purposes in Christ that reshapes life.
How “inheritance…in light” relates to time (v.12). Some hear it mostly as a future share believers will receive fully later. Others emphasize present belonging and status already granted, while still allowing a future completion.
How literal the “transfer” language is (v.13). Some take it chiefly as a vivid metaphor for a changed life and allegiance. Others say Paul is describing a real change of realm—an actual shift in spiritual authority and belonging, even if not visible.
The passage uses compressed, image-rich language (“filled,” “walk,” “inheritance,” “darkness/light,” “kingdom”). Those images can describe both present experience and future hope, and they can refer both to inner transformation and to objective change in belonging. The text itself doesn’t pause to define each image, so interpreters weigh nearby phrases differently.
