Question 1

What does Paul say he and his coworkers have been doing since they heard about the Colossians (v.9), and what does that suggest about the tone of this section?

Accepted Answer

Paul says that from the day they heard the report, they “haven’t ceased” praying and making requests for them (v.9). That sets a steady, ongoing tone rather than a one-time blessing. The section reads like a sustained intercession that flows out of earlier gratitude for their faith and love. It also shows that the main concerns are not introduced as accusations but as prayerful aims for continuing growth. Even the later strong language about rescue from darkness (vv.12–13) is framed as thanksgiving, not as a warning.

Question 2

According to vv.9–10, what is the stated purpose of being “filled with the knowledge of his will”?

Accepted Answer

The purpose is ethical and relational: “to walk worthily of the Lord” and “to please him in all respects” (v.10). Knowledge is not treated as a private possession or status marker. Paul links it directly to a way of life that fits the Lord they belong to. He then explains what that looks like: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God (v.10). So the passage presents understanding and conduct as tightly connected, with conduct being the goal of the requested understanding.

Question 3

List the outcomes Paul connects to a “worthy walk” in v.10. How do these outcomes relate to each other?

Accepted Answer

Paul describes three linked outcomes: (1) “bearing fruit in every good work,” (2) “increasing in the knowledge of God,” and (3) the overall aim of pleasing the Lord “in all respects” (v.10). The good works are visible “fruit,” suggesting concrete actions. Growth in knowing God is ongoing and complements the outward fruit, implying that deeper knowledge of God and a more fruitful life reinforce each other. Together they unpack what “worthy” means in Paul’s terms: not mere reputation, but a life shaped by devotion to the Lord and marked by tangible good.

Question 4

In v.11, what kind of strength is requested, and what is it for?

Accepted Answer

The strength requested is comprehensive (“with all power”) and measured by God’s own “glorious might” (v.11). Yet its purpose is not dominance, success, or social power. Paul names its target outcomes: “patience and perseverance,” and he adds “with joy” (v.11). That indicates endurance over time and staying power under pressure, carried out with an inner posture that is not crushed by hardship. The verse defines spiritual strength by resilient faithfulness rather than by control over circumstances or others.

Question 5

What shifts in vv.12–14 from request to thanksgiving, and what actions are attributed to the Father and the Son?

Accepted Answer

The language shifts from asking God to do something (vv.9–11) to thanking the Father for what he has already done (vv.12–13). The Father is credited with making believers “fit” to share the saints’ inheritance in light (v.12), delivering them from the authority of darkness, and transferring them into the kingdom of the Son he loves (v.13). The Son is then described as the one “in whom” believers have redemption and the forgiveness of sins, tied to his blood (v.14). The structure highlights divine initiative as the basis for the life Paul prays for.

Question 6

How does the passage describe the relationship between “inheritance,” “light,” “darkness,” and “kingdom” (vv.12–13)?

Accepted Answer

The passage pairs “inheritance” with “light” (v.12), then contrasts that with “the authority of darkness” (v.13). The movement is described as rescue and transfer: out of darkness’s authority and into the Son’s kingdom (v.13). “Inheritance” suggests a share in something belonging to God’s people (“saints”), while “kingdom” suggests belonging under a ruler’s reign. The imagery works together: light/inheritance/kingdom describe the new sphere of belonging; darkness/authority describe the old sphere from which deliverance occurred.

Question 7

What does v.14 add to the description of deliverance and transfer in vv.12–13?

Accepted Answer

Verse 14 anchors the rescue-and-transfer language in a specific benefit: “redemption… the forgiveness of our sins,” and it connects this to the Son’s blood. In other words, the move from darkness to the Son’s kingdom is not only a change of environment or allegiance; it is tied to release from bondage and to sins being forgiven. The phrase “in whom” also makes the Son the location or sphere where this redemption is possessed. So v.14 explains what the deliverance accomplishes at the level of sin and reconciliation.
