Question 1

What does the passage say Daniel decided, and where did that decision take place?

Accepted Answer

The text says Daniel “purposed in his heart” not to defile himself with the king’s special food and wine (v. 8). That language places the decision first at the level of inner resolve, not merely outward behavior. It presents Daniel as choosing a course before any negotiation happens, suggesting he has already weighed the issue as a matter of conscience. Only after that inward decision does he take outward steps, asking the supervising official for permission. The passage emphasizes both the personal nature of the decision and the public implications it will have.

Question 2

What items are explicitly included in Daniel’s concern about defilement?

Accepted Answer

The passage explicitly names two things: the king’s “dainties” (special or rich food) and “the wine which he drank” (v. 8). This matters because the concern is not limited to meat or a single questionable dish; it includes both food and drink provided by the royal table. Whatever the precise reason for defilement, the text frames the royal ration as a package deal tied to the king. Daniel’s request is therefore not a partial adjustment but a refusal of the king’s provisions as they are offered.

Question 3

How does Daniel express his refusal, and whom does he approach?

Accepted Answer

Daniel does not refuse loudly or directly confront the king. Instead, he “requested” permission from the “prince of the eunuchs,” the chief official overseeing the trainees (v. 8). The wording shows a respectful approach within the court’s chain of command. Daniel’s goal is stated twice: “that he might not defile himself.” This highlights that Daniel seeks a way to remain faithful without creating unnecessary conflict. The narrative focus is on a careful request that acknowledges the official’s authority and the court’s structure.

Question 4

What does verse 9 add to the story that verses 8 and 10 do not?

Accepted Answer

Verse 9 adds the narrator’s explanation of why Daniel’s request is received with openness rather than immediate rejection: “God made Daniel to find kindness and compassion” in the official’s sight. This is not presented as Daniel’s persuasive skill alone, though he does act wisely. The text explicitly credits God with shaping the human relationship. At the same time, verse 10 shows that kindness does not erase danger. Verse 9 therefore functions as a theological lens: God is at work even inside ordinary administrative decisions.

Question 5

What are the official’s specific fears, and what consequences does he anticipate?

Accepted Answer

The official says he fears “my lord the king,” because the king appointed the youths’ food and drink (v. 10). His fear is practical and political: if Daniel’s face looks worse than other youths “of your own age,” the official expects the king to hold him responsible. He describes the result in stark terms: Daniel’s choice could “endanger my head with the king,” implying severe punishment, even death. The text highlights that the official’s concern is not hostility toward Daniel but self-preservation under an absolute ruler.

Question 6

How does the passage hold together God’s action and human agency?

Accepted Answer

The passage presents both without treating them as rivals. Daniel initiates action: he decides, then requests permission (v. 8). God also acts: the narrator states God causes Daniel to receive kindness and compassion from the official (v. 9). Then the official speaks from his own motives and pressures, fearing the king’s reaction (v. 10). The combined effect is a layered view of events: Daniel’s responsible choices matter, real institutional constraints exist, and God can still direct outcomes within those constraints by shaping attitudes and opening relational space.

Question 7

What tension does verses 8–10 set up for the next part of the story?

Accepted Answer

Verses 8–10 establish a conflict with no easy resolution: Daniel’s conscience-driven refusal meets the court’s enforced policy. Daniel needs an alternative to avoid defilement, but the supervising official is accountable to the king for measurable results—appearance and health compared to peers (v. 10). Verse 9 hints at a possible path forward because the official is favorably disposed to Daniel, yet verse 10 shows the official cannot simply grant the request without fear. The passage therefore sets up a test: can faithfulness be maintained without triggering punishment?
