Question 1

What does Daniel’s first interaction with Arioch reveal about how he handles the crisis (vv. 14–15)?

Accepted Answer

The text highlights Daniel’s tone and method: he answers with “counsel and prudence” and asks a clarifying question about the urgency of the decree. Instead of panicking or resisting blindly, he turns a sudden threat into information he can act on. Arioch then “made the thing known” to Daniel, showing that Daniel’s calm questioning opens a path to understanding what is happening. The passage does not claim Arioch is sympathetic, only that Daniel’s approach results in an explanation that sets up Daniel’s next step.

Question 2

Why is Daniel’s request to the king for “time” important to the flow of the story (v. 16)?

Accepted Answer

Daniel’s request creates a pause between the death order and its execution. The story uses that pause as a hinge: Daniel can now seek an answer rather than be swept up in the decree. The text explicitly says Daniel promises to “show the king the interpretation,” which signals confidence but does not explain how he will obtain it. Read with the next verses, the time is immediately used for prayer and then for receiving a night vision. So the request is not delay for delay’s sake; it functions as space for seeking revelation.

Question 3

What do vv. 17–18 show about the role of Daniel’s companions in this episode?

Accepted Answer

Daniel does not treat the crisis as a solo test. He goes to his house, informs Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, and urges them to seek “mercies” from “the God of heaven” concerning the secret. Their participation is described in shared language—what “we desired” and what was made known “to us” (v. 23)—even though the vision is revealed to Daniel (v. 19). The stated purpose of their joint prayer is survival: that Daniel and his companions not perish with the rest of Babylon’s wise men.

Question 4

What is the “secret” in this passage, and how does the text say it becomes known (vv. 18–19)?

Accepted Answer

The “secret” is the hidden matter connected to the king’s crisis—what Daniel later calls “the king’s matter” (v. 23). In these verses, it is not solved by investigation or court expertise; it is “revealed” to Daniel “in a vision of the night.” The passage emphasizes that the disclosure is granted, not achieved. Even before giving details, the narrative frames the coming explanation as dependent on divine unveiling. That sets up a contrast with the earlier failure of the court experts in the chapter’s larger story.

Question 5

List the main claims Daniel makes about God in his blessing (vv. 20–22). What picture of God emerges?

Accepted Answer

Daniel’s blessing presents God as the owner of “wisdom and might” (v. 20), the one who governs time (“changes the times and the seasons,” v. 21), and the one who rules political outcomes (“removes kings, and sets up kings,” v. 21). God is also described as the source of true insight—giving wisdom and knowledge (v. 21)—and as the revealer of hidden realities (“deep and secret things,” v. 22). The picture is of a God who is both intellectually decisive (revealing truth) and historically decisive (directing eras and rulers).

Question 6

How does Daniel connect answered prayer to God’s character and actions (v. 23)?

Accepted Answer

Daniel thanks and praises “the God of my fathers,” tying the answer to a continuing relationship with Israel’s God rather than a new or unknown deity. He credits God with giving “wisdom and might,” and he directly links that gift to the specific request: God “made known to me what we desired of you.” Daniel then restates the outcome in concrete terms: God has made known “the king’s matter.” The verse shows a logical chain in Daniel’s speech—God’s character as giver and revealer explains why the hidden matter is now known.

Question 7

What tension does the passage hold between Babylon’s power and God’s sovereignty (vv. 14–16, 20–21)?

Accepted Answer

On one side, Babylon’s power is immediate and deadly: the king’s decree triggers executions, and Arioch enforces it (vv. 14–15). Daniel even must negotiate with the king for time (v. 16), showing the court’s authority over life and death. On the other side, Daniel’s praise claims a higher authority over the very structures Babylon embodies: God removes and sets up kings and governs times and seasons (v. 21). The passage does not deny Babylon’s real power; it frames it as ultimately under God’s control.
