Literary Context
This scene sits inside the larger story of Nebuchadnezzar’s troubling dream and his demand that his experts both recount it and explain it (2:1–13). After the wise men fail, a death order goes out, which creates the crisis Daniel steps into (2:12–13). Verses 14–23 show the hinge from public danger to private prayer: Daniel buys time, seeks God with others, receives the revelation, and praises God before he returns to the king (2:24–30). The passage also previews the interpretation that follows by emphasizing who controls wisdom and history.
Historical Context
The setting is the Neo-Babylonian court in the early years of Nebuchadnezzar II, when Judean exiles like Daniel and his companions served within Babylon’s training and advisory systems (cf. ch. 1). Royal “wise men” functioned as a broad class of court experts expected to provide reliable counsel, including reading omens and interpreting dreams, and they could face severe punishment for failure. Arioch, as captain of the king’s guard, acts as the enforcement arm of the royal decree. Daniel’s access to the king and his ability to request a delay suggests he has recognized standing within this court structure.
Theological Significance
This scene presents Daniel as a court official facing a lethal decree who responds with measured speech (“counsel and prudence”) and careful questions (vv. 14–15). He does not treat the crisis as only political; he immediately turns to God with others (vv. 17–18).

One question is what Daniel means when he promises to “show the king the interpretation” (v. 16). Some read “interpretation” narrowly: Daniel is asking for time to explain a dream whose content the king will recount later. Others read it more broadly in light of the larger chapter: Daniel is asking for time because he expects God to reveal both the dream’s content and its meaning.
A second question is how Daniel gained access to the king during an active execution order (v. 16). Some infer prior standing and normal court access. Others think the narrative compresses events, with access granted because of the extraordinary crisis.
The passage itself does not spell out whether Daniel already knows the dream’s content at v. 16, and “interpretation” can be used more than one way within the chapter’s larger flow. Also, the story moves quickly from arrest-level danger to an audience with the king, leaving practical steps unstated.
