Question 1

What does Daniel explicitly say about the source of Nebuchadnezzar’s power and status (vv. 37–38)?

Accepted Answer

Daniel speaks to Nebuchadnezzar with very high royal titles, but he frames the king’s greatness as something given by “the God of heaven.” The kingdom, power, strength, and glory are not presented as self-made achievements. Daniel also describes the scope of the king’s rule in sweeping terms—humans, animals, and birds are said to be “given into your hand.” Whatever the exact extent of the empire, the text’s main claim is that imperial authority exists under divine permission, not independent of it.

Question 2

How does the statue imagery communicate continuity and change across the kingdoms (vv. 39–43)?

Accepted Answer

The materials move from gold to silver to bronze to iron, then to a mixed combination of iron and clay in the feet and toes. The sequence implies continuity (one kingdom follows another) while the changing materials signal change in character. Daniel emphasizes different qualities: one kingdom is called “inferior,” another is said to rule widely, the fourth is defined by crushing strength like iron, and the final stage is divided and unstable. The mixed feet/toes show that later power can include real strength yet still be brittle and unable to hold together.

Question 3

What explicit details are given about the second, third, and fourth kingdoms (vv. 39–40), and what is left unspecified?

Accepted Answer

Daniel explicitly says the next kingdom comes “after you” and is “inferior” to Nebuchadnezzar’s. He then describes a third kingdom of bronze that “shall bear rule over all the earth,” and a fourth kingdom “strong as iron” that breaks and crushes. What is left unspecified is their names, locations, kings, or dates. The passage provides a relative sequence and distinguishing traits rather than a labeled historical list. This is why later readers debate which empires these represent while still agreeing that the text depicts successive world powers.

Question 4

According to Daniel, what is the political outcome of the iron-and-clay mixture, and how is that reinforced (vv. 41–43)?

Accepted Answer

Daniel interprets the feet and toes as a “divided kingdom.” He repeats the same idea in several ways: it has some iron-strength, yet it is mixed with clay and therefore brittle; it will be “partly strong, and partly broken.” Verse 43 adds an image of attempted bonding—“they shall mingle… but they shall not cling”—and compares the failure to the way iron and clay do not truly combine. The repeated wording functions like underlining: the key outcome is instability and failed unity, not total weakness.

Question 5

What does the phrase “they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men” contribute to the interpretation (v. 43)?

Accepted Answer

The phrase introduces a concrete way the divided kingdom tries to secure unity. The text itself does not spell out the method, so readers propose possibilities such as marriage connections among ruling houses, political alliances, or broader social blending. But the interpretation Daniel gives is clear: whatever “mingling” means, it does not achieve lasting cohesion—“they shall not cling to one another.” So the line contributes an explanation for why the kingdom remains divided: efforts to bind its parts together fail at a basic level, like incompatible materials that will not fuse.

Question 6

List the specific claims made about God’s kingdom in vv. 44–45. How do these contrast with the earlier kingdoms?

Accepted Answer

Daniel says that “in the days of those kings” God will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, will not be left to another people, will break and consume the other kingdoms, and will stand forever. By contrast, the earlier kingdoms are temporary: they succeed one another, and even the strongest (iron) is later shown to be fractured (iron/clay). The earlier kingdoms depend on conquest and unstable unity; God’s kingdom is described as permanent and not subject to being handed over. The stone “cut… without hands” reinforces that it is not produced by ordinary human power.

Question 7

How does verse 45 function as Daniel’s conclusion to this interpretation, and what kind of confidence does it claim?

Accepted Answer

Verse 45 restates the key image (a stone not cut by hands strikes and shatters the statue’s materials) and then draws a conclusion: the “great God” has revealed what will happen “hereafter.” Daniel finishes with two emphatic claims—“the dream is certain” and “the interpretation… sure.” This ending does not add new kingdoms; it reinforces the authority behind the message (God as revealer) and the reliability of the timeline presented. The passage wants the king to understand not only the meaning but also the certainty of what is foretold.
