Verse by Verse
Daniel identifies the first kingdom Daniel says the dream will now be interpreted for the king. He addresses Nebuchadnezzar as the supreme ruler of his moment and says the “God of heaven” has granted him kingdom, power, and honor. The wide scope of his rule is pictured as dominion over human society and even animals and birds. Daniel then ties the dream image to the king: he is the “head of gold.”
Three kingdoms follow, with increasing hardness After Nebuchadnezzar, another kingdom will arise that is “inferior” to his. A third kingdom of bronze follows and is said to rule widely. Then a fourth kingdom is compared to iron: it breaks and crushes, overpowering what is before it. The emphasis is not on beauty but on force and capacity to shatter.
The fourth kingdom becomes divided and unstable The feet and toes, mixing iron with clay, point to a kingdom that is split. It still has some iron-like strength, but it is also brittle. Daniel repeats the mixed-material point to underline the outcome: the kingdom will be partly strong and partly broken. The line about mingling “with the seed of men” describes attempted bonding or alliance, yet the parts will not hold together—like iron and clay that do not truly combine.
Literary Context
This passage is the explanation stage of the larger scene where Nebuchadnezzar demands both his dream and its meaning. Daniel has already credited the revelation to the “God of heaven,” not human skill, and has described the statue dream (gold head, silver, bronze, iron, and mixed feet) and the stone that strikes it. Here the interpretation matches each material to a kingdom in sequence, moving from Nebuchadnezzar’s present rule to what comes “hereafter.” The logic flows from identifying the first kingdom to outlining the later ones, then to the stone and the lasting kingdom it represents.
Historical Context
The setting is the Neo-Babylonian Empire, when Babylon dominated the Levant and ruled over exiled populations, including Judeans deported from Jerusalem. Royal courts used wise men and interpreters, and dreams were widely treated as meaningful for statecraft. Daniel, presented as a court official among exiles, speaks directly to imperial power while also placing that power within a larger story of changing empires. The description assumes a world where empires replace one another through conquest and internal weakness, and where political unity can fracture even when military strength remains.
Theological Significance
Daniel presents history as a sequence of real human kingdoms that rise and fall under God’s oversight. Nebuchadnezzar’s rule is great, yet it is described as given by “the God of heaven” (vv. 37–38). After him, other kingdoms come in order, differing in strength and cohesion (vv. 39–43). The final point of the interpretation is not simply political change but God establishing a kingdom that cannot be destroyed, cannot be transferred to another people, and will outlast and replace the earlier kingdoms (vv. 44–45).

God’s enduring kingdom replaces the whole statue “In the days of those kings,” God sets up a kingdom that will never be destroyed and will not be handed to another people. This kingdom breaks and consumes the earlier kingdoms and lasts forever. Daniel connects this to the stone cut “without hands,” which strikes the statue and pulverizes all its materials together. He closes by saying God has revealed what will happen later and that the dream and its interpretation are reliable.
The main differences are about identification and timing rather than the basic storyline.
Which historical empires match the second, third, and fourth kingdoms (vv. 39–40). Many readings map them to well-known ancient empires after Babylon, but they disagree on the exact sequence, especially for the “fourth” kingdom and how long it lasts.
What the “divided” iron-and-clay stage refers to (vv. 41–43). Some take it as a later phase of the fourth kingdom (a weakened form of the same empire). Others see it as a set of successor powers that share traits but never fully unify.
What “they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men” means (v. 43). Options include royal intermarriage, political alliances, or broader social mixing. The shared point is attempted unity that does not hold.
When “in the days of those kings” points (v. 44). Some read it narrowly (the “toes/kings” of the final stage). Others read it more broadly (during the era represented by the later parts of the statue).
The passage gives a clear sequence but leaves most kingdoms unnamed (only Nebuchadnezzar is directly identified as the gold head). Phrases like “inferior,” “over all the earth,” and “in the days of those kings” can be read either as precise historical markers or as conventional royal language describing empire in general. The imagery (metals, feet/toes, stone) communicates relative strength and instability, but it does not provide dates or explicit empire names beyond Babylon.
