A smaller question is what “the part of the hand” means: the palm area, or simply that only a portion (the writing fingers) was visible.
The text is deliberately selective: it emphasizes visibility (“the king saw”) and effect (terror), but it does not explain mechanics (where the hand came from, how much was seen, or how medically exact the bodily language should be). That invites readers to supply assumptions from broader biblical patterns of divine signs, or from common ways people describe fear.
Explicitly, the passage shows an unmissable sign placed in full view and a ruler immediately undone by it. The king’s fear and his loud summons underline urgency and loss of control. The reward offer shows how strongly the court assumes that meaning can be accessed through its professionals—and how valuable “interpretation” is in a world where signs are treated as messages.
As theological inference (beyond the bare description), the scene portrays a limit to imperial confidence: there is a message in the king’s own hall that he cannot decode by power or patronage. It prepares for the larger chapter’s theme that the highest earthly authority still answers to a higher one (compare Daniel 4:37).
