The king’s night of distress The king returns to his palace, but he cannot move on as if nothing happened. He refuses food and declines the usual music or entertainment. The verse underlines how complete his unease is: he cannot even sleep.
The king’s urgent morning search At daybreak the king gets up early and hurries to the lions’ den. As he approaches, he calls out loudly and sorrowfully to Daniel. His question frames the central issue: Daniel serves “the living God,” and the king asks whether that God was able to deliver Daniel from the lions.
Daniel’s report from inside the den Daniel answers with a standard court blessing toward the king (“live forever”), signaling respect and that he is alive. He explains the rescue in two parts: God sent an angel and stopped the lions from harming him. Daniel then gives reasons in relational terms—he was found innocent before God, and he has also done the king no wrong.
Literary Context
This scene completes the tension set up earlier in Daniel 6: Daniel is trapped by a court-made rule that targets his regular prayer, and the king is trapped by his own unchangeable decree. The narrative slows down to emphasize the long night, the king’s conflicted feelings, and the public test of whether Daniel will survive. The morning visit to the den functions like a verification moment: the king’s question, Daniel’s report, and the inspection of Daniel’s condition settle what happened inside the den and why Daniel can be released.
Historical Context
The passage assumes a royal court where decrees carry binding force and where high officials can weaponize policy to remove a rival. Lions’ dens are presented as an execution method controlled by the crown, with a sealed opening and guards or protocols that prevent tampering. The king’s fasting and refusal of entertainment reflect ancient mourning and anxiety practices, especially when a ruler feels responsible yet powerless to change the outcome. The narrative also reflects life in a multiethnic empire administration, where an exile like Daniel can hold high office and still be vulnerable to court politics.
Theological Significance
The passage highlights a full night of royal anxiety and a morning that functions like a public check on what happened in the lions’ den. The king’s fasting, lack of entertainment, and sleeplessness show he is not emotionally detached from Daniel’s fate (explicit in v.18). At dawn he rushes to the den and asks whether Daniel’s “living God” is able to deliver (explicit in vv.19–20).

Public outcome and stated cause The king’s mood turns from dread to great joy, and he orders Daniel to be pulled up out of the den. Daniel is examined and found completely unhurt. The verse adds an explanation for the outcome from the narrator’s viewpoint: Daniel had trusted in his God.
Daniel’s own explanation is also explicit: God sent “his angel” and stopped the lions from harming him (vv.21–22). Daniel connects the outcome to his innocence “before” God and to having done the king no wrong (v.22). What “angel” means. Some readers take “angel” as a heavenly being acting under God’s command. Others note that the word can also mean “messenger” and argue the text could be leaving room for a representative agent. Still, the story’s main point does not depend on which option is chosen: God is portrayed as the one who delivers.
What “innocence” means here. Some understand Daniel’s “innocence” as moral blamelessness in general. Others read it more narrowly: Daniel is innocent with respect to the charge that got him executed—he has not rebelled against God, and he has not harmed the king.
What the king’s question reveals. The king’s “is your God able…?” can be heard as doubt, as hope, or as a test spoken under grief. The text does not directly report the king’s inner beliefs, but it does portray strong emotional investment and urgency.
Why the disagreement exists The passage gives short explanations without extra detail. It reports Daniel’s words (“God sent his angel…”) and the narrator’s summary (“because he trusted”) but does not pause to define terms like “angel” or to spell out whether “innocence” is broad character description or case-specific vindication. Likewise, the king’s tone is described (“lamentable voice”), but his theology is not.
What this passage clearly contributes It portrays God’s power to protect a faithful servant in a setting where human law and royal authority appear final. It also shows how the story connects deliverance with trust in God (explicit in v.23) while presenting Daniel’s vindication as both religious (“before him innocence was found in me”) and political (“before you… have I done no hurt”) (explicit in v.22).
