Question 1

What does the text emphasize about the king’s actions and condition during the night (v.18), and what do those details communicate within the story?

Accepted Answer

Verse 18 stacks three details: the king fasts, refuses music/entertainment, and cannot sleep. In the story these are not random habits; they underline that the king is distressed and unsettled about Daniel’s fate. The fasting and absence of entertainment signal mourning-like anxiety, while the sleeplessness intensifies the sense of a long, helpless night. The narrative slows down here to keep attention on the king’s inner turmoil and to set up a sharp contrast with the morning scene, when he moves quickly to find out what happened.

Question 2

How does the early-morning timing and the king’s haste (v.19) function in the narrative?

Accepted Answer

In verse 19 the king gets up “very early” and goes “in haste” to the lions’ den. This timing creates a verification moment: the story moves from sealed, unseen danger during the night to an open check at first light. The haste also shows the king’s urgency—he is not waiting for reports or delegating the task. Narratively, the dawn visit sets up a direct question-and-answer exchange between the king and Daniel, so the reader hears the outcome from inside the den and then sees the public result.

Question 3

What does the king call Daniel and Daniel’s God (v.20), and why are those titles important for the episode?

Accepted Answer

The king addresses Daniel as “servant” of “the living God” and notes that Daniel serves God continually. These titles matter because they frame the central issue: Daniel’s identity is primarily tied to God, not just to the Persian court, and God is described as living and active rather than distant. The king’s question—whether that God is able to deliver from lions—turns the execution into a test of divine ability. The wording also shows the king understands Daniel’s practice as steady, not a one-time act.

Question 4

According to Daniel’s report (vv.21–22), what exactly happened in the den, and what reasons does Daniel give for his rescue?

Accepted Answer

Daniel answers first with court respect (“O king, live forever”), signaling he is alive and loyal in posture. He then gives the event summary: God sent “his angel,” and the lions’ mouths were shut so they did not hurt him. Daniel supplies reasons in relational terms: innocence was found in him “before” God, and he has done “no hurt” to the king. The text does not list a sequence of physical actions; it focuses on God’s initiative and on Daniel’s innocence regarding God and the king.

Question 5

How does verse 23 interpret why Daniel was unharmed, and how does that relate to Daniel’s own explanation in verse 22?

Accepted Answer

Verse 23 reports two things: the king’s great joy and the inspection result—no injury was found on Daniel. Then it adds a narrator-level explanation: this happened “because he had trusted in his God.” That emphasis on trust lines up with Daniel’s own God-centered explanation (God sent an angel and shut the lions’ mouths), but it adds a human-side description: Daniel’s posture toward God is trust. Daniel also mentions innocence before God and toward the king, so the passage links deliverance with both God’s action and Daniel’s faithful standing.

Question 6

What elements in the passage show a shift from uncertainty to certainty, and how does the text mark that shift?

Accepted Answer

The passage begins with uncertainty: the king cannot sleep, and the outcome is unknown behind a sealed den. The shift starts with the king’s dawn rush and culminates in two voices: the king’s anxious question and Daniel’s calm reply. Certainty is marked by Daniel’s spoken explanation (“they have not hurt me”) and by the external verification in verse 23, where Daniel is lifted out and examined with “no manner of hurt.” The king’s emotional movement from distress to “exceeding glad” also signals that the question has been answered publicly and decisively.
