Question 1

In vv.26–28, what specific actions and words does Moses highlight to describe Israel’s refusal?

Accepted Answer

Moses highlights both behavior and speech. The behavior is blunt: they “wouldn’t go up” and that refusal is labeled “rebellion against the commandment of Yahweh” (v.26). The speech happens “in your tents,” suggesting private, internal community talk that spreads discouragement (v.27). Their words reinterpret the exodus as motivated by Yahweh’s “hatred” and aimed at destruction through the Amorites. They also repeat what “our brothers” said: the people are bigger, the cities are heavily fortified, and the Anakim are there (v.28). The picture is a refusal reinforced by a fear-shaped narrative.

Question 2

What role do the scouts (“our brothers”) play in the people’s fear, based on v.28?

Accepted Answer

Verse 28 portrays “our brothers” as a major channel through which fear becomes communal certainty: “our brothers have made our heart to melt.” The verse doesn’t focus on tactical details but on the effect their report had—loss of courage. The content they pass on emphasizes three things: the opponents are “greater and taller,” the cities are large and strongly fortified (described in extreme terms), and there are Anakim there. Whether “brothers” refers only to the scouts or to a broader group repeating the message, the text’s point is that the report becomes a catalyst for collapse in morale.

Question 3

How does Moses respond to the fear in v.29, and what does that suggest about the immediate issue?

Accepted Answer

Moses’ response in v.29 is short and direct: “Don’t dread, neither be afraid of them.” He addresses fear itself as the immediate issue driving the decision. The text doesn’t present his first move as providing new intelligence about the land; instead he confronts the emotional conclusion that the people have already reached. That brevity also fits the scene: the people are not merely undecided; they are refusing and speaking as if disaster is certain. Moses treats fear as something that has taken control of interpretation and action, requiring a clear counter-word.

Question 4

List the reasons Moses gives in vv.30–31 for why they should not be afraid. How do these reasons work?

Accepted Answer

Moses gives two main reasons. First, Yahweh “goes before you” and “will fight for you,” and he ties this to a shared memory: what Yahweh did in Egypt “before your eyes” (v.30). The logic is continuity—God has already demonstrated power against a major threat. Second, Moses points to the wilderness journey: they have “seen” how Yahweh carried them like a man carries his son, all the way to “this place” (v.31). That image argues for steady care and commitment, not abandonment. Both reasons use lived experience as evidence, not abstract theory.

Question 5

According to vv.32–33, what exactly makes Israel’s lack of belief especially serious in this moment?

Accepted Answer

The passage stresses that their unbelief happens “yet” in the face of ongoing, visible guidance. Verse 32 states the verdict: “you didn’t believe Yahweh your God.” Verses 33 then pile up concrete examples of guidance they experienced: Yahweh went before them on the way, sought out places to camp, and marked direction with fire at night and cloud by day. The seriousness is the contrast: they are not lacking signs of leadership or care; they are rejecting a well-attested pattern of God’s presence. The text frames unbelief as refusing to interpret that guidance as trustworthy for the next step.

Question 6

How do vv.27 and vv.30–31 present two competing interpretations of the same history (the exodus and wilderness)?

Accepted Answer

In v.27 the people reinterpret the exodus as evidence of hostility: Yahweh “hated us” and brought us out to be destroyed by others. That reading turns rescue into a trap. In vv.30–31 Moses offers a competing interpretation using the same history: the exodus shows Yahweh’s willingness to fight for them, and the wilderness shows sustained, father-like care. Both sides appeal to shared events, but they assign opposite meanings to them. The passage highlights how fear can recast the past into suspicion, while Moses insists the past should build confidence in Yahweh’s character and commitment.

Question 7

What do the repeated “you have seen” / “before your eyes” phrases contribute to Moses’ argument in this unit?

Accepted Answer

Those phrases tie Moses’ claims to public, experienced evidence. In v.30 he points to Egypt “before your eyes,” grounding “he will fight for you” in what they personally witnessed. In v.31 he says “you have seen” Yahweh carrying them through the wilderness, again emphasizing observable care over time. This matters because the people’s fear is fed by reports and imagined outcomes, while Moses calls them back to what has already been demonstrated in their shared story. The repetition makes the failure in vv.32–33 sharper: unbelief is not presented as ignorance, but as rejecting what has been shown.
