“To this day” (v.4) is sometimes read as pointing to an ongoing political reality (Egypt’s power no longer threatening Israel in the same way), and sometimes as emphasizing the enduring significance of the remembered event within Israel’s story.
The passage compresses multiple episodes and uses broad terms (“charge,” “chastisement,” “your children,” “to this day”) without defining boundaries. Because the paragraph’s main aim is to persuade by appeal to shared memory, it can leave details open: whether the emphasis is on instruction vs. punishment, and whether “children” marks age or generation.
Explicitly, the text presents love for Yahweh and keeping Yahweh’s requirements as inseparable (v.1).
