Literary Context
This instruction sits inside a larger section describing Israel’s annual worship calendar and how these festivals are to be kept in the land (Deuteronomy 16). Earlier lines in the chapter describe how to observe Passover/Unleavened Bread, Weeks, and Tents, often stressing celebration “before Yahweh” and sharing with others in the community. Verses 16–17 act like a summary requirement that gathers the festivals into a single expectation: appear at Yahweh’s chosen place and bring gifts that match one’s means. The focus is coordinated worship and visible gratitude at set times.
