Either way, the verse forbids introducing the Asherah-associated item next to Yahweh’s altar.

A second question is how broad the prohibition is meant to be. Some read “beside the altar” as a precise limit: the problem is placing this item right next to Yahweh’s altar. Others read that location as an example of a broader rule against adopting such shrine furniture at all, with the altar setting mentioned because it would be the most tempting and most confusing place to add it.

A third question is about the “pillar”: whether the text bans every kind of standing stone in any context, or whether it targets pillars used as cult markers in worship settings. The verse itself does not describe an alternate acceptable use; it simply forbids “setting up” the pillar and adds Yahweh’s negative evaluation.

Why the disagreement exists The Hebrew terms behind “Asherah” and “pillar” can point to more than one referent in ancient practice: a deity name, an object linked to that deity, or a customary shrine marker. Also, v. 21 specifies a location (“beside the altar”), while v. 22 does not, which raises the question of whether both rules are equally local or whether the second is more general.
