Turning back and prolonged circling Moses says Israel “turned” and traveled toward the wilderness route leading in the direction of the Red Sea, following what Yahweh had told him. The result was a long period of moving around Mount Seir, described simply as “many days,” emphasizing extended delay rather than new progress.
A new directive—stop circling, go north Yahweh speaks to Moses and declares that the time spent circling “this mountain” is enough. The command is direct: Israel must change direction and head north, marking a shift from wandering to purposeful movement.
Passing Edom’s border without conflict Moses is told to instruct the people that they will pass through the territory-edge of the “children of Esau” in Seir. Israel should expect Edom to be afraid, so Israel must be careful. They are explicitly forbidden to provoke or fight, because Yahweh will not give Israel any of that land—“not even enough for a footstep”—since Mount Seir has been given to Esau as his possession.
Literary Context

Israel, still a traveling community, must move close enough to create fear but is told to avoid escalation and respect existing land claims. The note about buying food and water suggests trade and controlled access to resources along the route, rather than conquest at this stage.
Theological Significance
Deuteronomy 2:1–7 presents Israel’s long delay as real movement but not real progress: they “circled” the Seir region for “many days,” then receive a clear directional change from Yahweh—stop circling and head north. Some readers take “pass through the border” to mean Israel would actually enter Edomite-controlled areas (perhaps along a road), but only under strict non-aggression and by paying for supplies. Others read it as staying at the edge—moving along Edom’s boundary—close enough to be noticed and feared, yet not crossing into what Edom would treat as its territory.
A second, smaller difference concerns “not even enough for a footstep.” Some take it as absolute: no occupation, no seizure, no permanent claim of any kind. Others allow that brief passage on existing routes could still fit the statement, because the point is that Yahweh will not grant Israel any land as possession there.
The passage uses border language that can be heard two ways: moving through an area versus moving along an edge. It also pairs a very strong land-denial statement (“not even a footstep”) with practical instructions that assume contact with Edom (fear, caution, buying food and water). That combination leaves readers to decide what level of physical entry best fits both parts.
