24:14-15Meaning
Don’t exploit hired workers; pay promptly Israel must not take advantage of a hired worker who is “poor and needy,” whether the worker is a fellow Israelite or a resident foreigner (Deuteronomy 24:14). Payment must be made the same day, before nightfall, because the worker depends on that wage and is “setting his heart on it” (counting on it for survival) (Deuteronomy 24:15). If the employer withholds pay and the worker cries out to Yahweh, the employer becomes accountable for wrongdoing.
