Second, “Isn’t he your father who has bought you?” (v.6) can be understood with different emphases. Some hear “bought” mainly as rescue language (God redeemed Israel from danger and slavery). Others hear it mainly as acquisition/ownership language tied to covenant formation (God took Israel as his people). Many readings blend both: God’s “buying” is the way he secured them as his own.
The passage uses sharp, compressed poetry. Lines like “not his children” can function either as a literal denial or as a rhetorical way of saying, “you are behaving like people who don’t belong.” Similarly, “bought” is a relational metaphor that can point to deliverance, to belonging, or to both, and the poem does not stop to define it.
Explicitly, the text claims that God’s character is reliable and fair (“Rock,” “justice,” “faithful,” “without wrongdoing), and it uses that claim to highlight Israel’s corruption as an unjust response. It also presents teaching about God as something meant to give life, and it treats communal remembrance—asking fathers and elders—as a normal way to test and transmit Israel’s identity and story. Theologically inferred from these explicit claims is a strong linkage between who God is (fair and faithful) and how Israel’s history should be interpreted (their failures are not caused by unfairness in God).
