Listen and do, so you may live and possess the land Moses addresses Israel directly and calls for attentive listening to the “statutes and ordinances” he is teaching. The purpose is action (“to do them”), with a stated outcome: life and successful entry to possess the land that Yahweh, the God of their fathers, is giving.
Do not reshape the command; keep it as given Israel is told not to add to, or subtract from, what Moses commands. The reason given is so they can truly keep Yahweh’s commandments; altering the instruction would undermine obedience to what was actually commanded.
A concrete warning and a contrasting survival Moses appeals to what they have personally seen: Yahweh’s action “because of Baal-peor,” where those who followed Baal-peor were destroyed from among Israel. In contrast, those who “cleaved” (held fast) to Yahweh are described as all being alive “this day,” making the warning immediate and experiential.

Historical Context
The setting assumed by the passage is Israel poised to enter Canaan after years in the wilderness, with Moses presenting instructions for life “in the land” they are about to possess. The audience includes people who have seen decisive events in the recent past, including the incident at Baal-peor, which is used as a warning example. The speech assumes a world of neighboring peoples who will “hear” about Israel’s statutes and form opinions about Israel’s wisdom and social order. The land is pictured as a gift from Yahweh tied to responsible conduct within it.
Theological Significance
Deuteronomy 4:1–8 presents Moses as a teacher of Yahweh’s “statutes and ordinances,” and Israel as a people expected to act on what they hear, not only listen. The passage also claims that obedience will be visible: other peoples will hear about these rules and describe Israel as wise and discerning (v.6). Finally, it highlights Yahweh’s distinctive closeness (v.7) and the perceived rightness of the laws being set before Israel (v.8).
What “live” means (v.1). Some read “live” mainly as physical survival and stability (not dying like the Baal-peor offenders, and enduring in the land). Others think it also includes broader flourishing under God’s covenant—life as a whole way of existence shaped by loyalty to Yahweh. Both fit the immediate logic, but they stress different aspects.
How far “do not add or subtract” reaches (v.2). Some treat this as a broad principle: God’s instruction should not be revised by human preference in any age. Others read it more narrowly as protecting the integrity of Moses’ covenant teaching at this moment (especially as Israel prepares to enter the land). Both agree the verse is guarding faithful keeping of what was actually commanded.
How to understand “all… alive” (v.4). Some take it as a near-literal description of the faithful group Moses addresses (“everyone of you”). Others take it as emphasis in speech, highlighting the contrast: those loyal to Yahweh survived as a group, even if not every individual without exception is in view.
Why the disagreement exists The passage is very direct about obedience, warning, and public witness, but some of its key words are broad. “Life” can mean mere survival or a fuller covenant life. “Add/subtract” can be applied as a general rule or as a context-specific safeguard. And expressions like “all” can function either as strict totality or as rhetorical emphasis.
