Question 1

How does the passage connect “listening” and “doing,” and what outcomes are attached to that connection?

Accepted Answer

Moses speaks as a teacher addressing Israel directly: they are to “listen” to the statutes and ordinances he is teaching in order to do them (v.1). Listening is not treated as the endpoint but as the route to action. The outcomes named are concrete within Deuteronomy’s storyline: “that you may live,” and that they may “go in and possess the land” Yahweh is giving (v.1). Later he repeats that these teachings are meant to be done “in the land” they are entering (v.5), reinforcing that obedience is tied to life in the land, not only to hearing instruction.

Question 2

What is the stated reason for the command not to add to or subtract from Moses’ instruction (v.2)?

Accepted Answer

Verse 2 does more than prohibit change; it gives a purpose clause: “that you may keep the commandments of Yahweh your God which I command you.” The logic is that altering the instruction undermines real obedience, because people would no longer be keeping what Yahweh commanded through Moses. In this passage, the concern is not about creativity or commentary in the abstract, but about fidelity to the commanded content. The warning also fits the chapter’s emphasis that Moses is passing on what he himself received from Yahweh (v.5), so the content is treated as fixed and authoritative for Israel.

Question 3

How does Moses use the Baal-peor event to support his call to obedience (vv.3–4)?

Accepted Answer

Moses appeals to shared memory: “Your eyes have seen what Yahweh did because of Baal-peor” (v.3). The example functions as a warning with a clear contrast. Those who “followed Baal-peor” are said to have been destroyed from among Israel (v.3), while those who “held fast” to Yahweh are said to be alive “this day” (v.4). In context, this is not a detached historical note; it is evidence offered to the current audience that loyalty versus disloyalty has real consequences under Yahweh’s covenant relationship, directly supporting the earlier “that you may live” logic (v.1).

Question 4

What does the passage claim other nations will notice, and what conclusion will they draw (v.6)?

Accepted Answer

Verse 6 presents obedience as something observable and discussable beyond Israel. Moses says that keeping and doing these statutes will be “your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples.” The nations are pictured as hearing the statutes and then forming an evaluation: they will say that Israel is a “great nation” and “a wise and understanding people.” The passage does not suggest the nations will first witness military power or wealth; rather, the distinctive feature is the quality of Israel’s ordered life shaped by these commands. Israel’s law is therefore portrayed as a public sign of wisdom, not merely an internal religious practice.

Question 5

What two features make Israel “great” in Moses’ rhetorical questions (vv.7–8)?

Accepted Answer

Moses asks two “What great nation is there…?” questions, each pointing to a distinct marker of Israel’s greatness. First, Israel has a God “so near,” with Yahweh described as responsive “whenever we call on him” (v.7). Second, Israel has “statutes and ordinances so righteous as all this law” being set before them (v.8). Together, these link relationship and instruction: Yahweh’s nearness is not separated from Yahweh’s commands. The passage treats both divine accessibility and the character of the law as distinctive when compared with surrounding peoples, reinforcing why obedience would be viewed as wisdom (v.6).

Question 6

What does the passage suggest about the source and purpose of Moses’ teaching (v.5)?

Accepted Answer

Verse 5 emphasizes both source and aim. Moses says he has taught the statutes and ordinances “as Yahweh my God commanded me,” presenting his teaching as derived from Yahweh’s authority rather than Moses’ own invention. The purpose is also explicit: “that you should do so in the midst of the land where you go in to possess it.” This places the teaching within Israel’s transition into settled life. The passage portrays the law as guidance for lived community in the land, not just a wilderness-era set of rules, and it ties that guidance to Yahweh’s command and Israel’s future stability.
